Question If you wear an ortho boot

Can you tell me about it? Does it work well for you, and is it comfortable?

My foot keeps on swelling and I am no longer fitting in the pair of men's size 12 clogs!

So... I am considering something else.

I'd love your input and advice. Thanks.

Hey

I was in an ortho boot with an air pump and everything after my break in June of 2006. I was in the boot from about July till the very end of November. To tell you the truth, it wasn't very comfy at all. At first when I got it (before dx with rsd) my foot was tiny. Then slowly, the boot was becoming smaller (from swelling) and then I got out of it in December when rsd spread to other leg and I was wheelchair bound. Then shortly after that, I tried to go back into the boot and managed to for like a week which wasn't very easy. Then I had a bad setback (severe allergic reaction, steven johnsons syndrome) that caused my foot to turn black, blue, green, and every color imaginable and it swelled up like 4 times its size. With rsd ontop of all of that, I thought I was gonna die. I stopped wearing the boot after that and just wore REALLY fuzzy socks cause I didn't want anyone to see my foot looking like that and my other foot kinda looking almost the same. My feet are still kinda swollen so I still can't really wear the boot. Excluding the swelling and allergic reaction, the boot didn't harm my rsd.

I do think that if you are incapable of wearing anything else to protect your foot(feet), then the boot helps with protection and support and desensitization as well. Just make sure to get a big enough size.

Thanks Nikmcjo! I think I am going to have to get an ortho boot... If I didn't have to leave the house I wouldn't mind just wearing socks, but I have to go out to go to physical therapy several times a week!

I'll keep in mind about getting a large enough size.

The swelling in my foot will go down a little over night, but once I start weight bearing it will heat up, turn red and start swelling.

Oh, and I found some of those soft fuzzy socks that you were talking about! They are so soft and cozy, plus they aren't as constricting as other socks, so they are easier to wear with swollen feet. Also, my foot has a soft red spot on the side sometimes, which my physical therapist is afraid will burst, so I don't want something too rough rubbing my foot/ it'll break open.

My foot does the same thing. During the day at therapy, it swells up and they then make me do contrast baths with just the cold water to bring down the swelling. You can probably imagine how that is so I don't tell them when my foot is swelling anymore. Almost anything is better than that water. In the morning when I wake up though, it has gone down a lot. Mine turns purple instead of red when it swells though.

Haha, I was soooooooo happy when they had a sale at Walmart on those for like a dollar each so I stocked up on all of the fuzzy socks they had

They were scared of the same thing with me as they were with you when I had a blistery looking thing ontop of my foot. They didn't want it to burst open or anything so the fuzzy socks helped with that.
