Jimking,
don't waste your money. I got one and its horrible. Unfortunately I am still paying for it or I would get a temperpedic.

Alt1268, what is it about the sleep number bed that bothers you? What bothers my wife with the foam kind of beds is heat. Cold does not bother her as much as heat does. She sweats alot even when I think its cold. Her take on the foam beds is they form to the outline of the body and in short order heat then builds up in those indented areas.

Hi Jimking

Hi Jimking, Just a few thoughts about the bed issue. I know how hard it is for your wife to sleep.
Those hot spots can be a concern if you sink too deeply into the mattress. However the tempeur pedic, has a firm one, in which you to not do that, but you still get the support. They cost a bunch. Also there are now sheets made by special companies that have products, both blankets and sheets, that distribute heat, or vent it, instead of getting over heated. I can dig around for information on those if you want me too. I sure hope she can find what she needs for comfort of sleep. ginnie

Thanks Ginny! She's hell bent on the sleep number not the foam kind because sometime ago we slept at a relative's house who had the foam bed. I actually loved the bed but she did not. I do believe you that times have changed and there are beds now that do not form to the body like the older ones do. When it comes down to crunch time to purchase a new king size (opposed to the queen we've been using since 1984 (not the same mattress however) :) I will push to check those newer beds out too.

Hi Jimking

Do try several good mattress shops. Try out the firm foam ones. I am not even sure, that off brands do not carry these firm ones now. I love my foam one, and wouldn't go to a sleep number bed for anything. Besides you are paying for an adjustable kind, once you adjust to what you need, the controlls are no longer needed.
Start your search, I do bet you can find something these days, expensive or not, that will help both you and your wife. I wish you all the best. ginnie

the sleep number bed only allows you to lay one way. If you move you will wake up with pain in other bony places. Knees, elbows, etc Even at my so called number my back still hurts. They have a so called cooling mattress that lays on top of the air coils, but I still find myself on occassion waking up in sweat. My husband complains of back pain almost everymorning. maybe it's just the fact we are getting older and your not suppose to sleep worth a damn.

I purchased a sleep # bed with the capibility of elevating different positions. I needed this option because of my spine issues and was having difficulty getting/raising myself into a position to get out of bed. I have a walker by my bed so when I raise the bed in the a.m., I reach for the walker and put my body weight on that to help getting out of bed. I just use the walker for that reason only. (otherwise, I usually use a cane. Just the feature of the bed raising has been a great help in my case. Not sure if that would be helpful for your wife. If so, it is helpful to have the ability to raise the head portion of the bed.

I found using, the "0" as a number guide, then holding the number remote in hand, while in bed with blankets on, watching it go to the "35. I was using "40, but found i was having additional pain issues. I am a side sleeper and just had more pain with the #40. My son was having issues (he was using #40) I suggested he try this method and stop at #35. He was surprised how just the going down of 5 made a big difference.

Hope this is some help to you. Choosing a bed/mattress is sooooo difficult.
