Default Question on Access Port

I have a question regarding my access port. I got my port about 6 years ago and its great and dont know what I would be doing without it. About a year and a half ago it was replaced with a new one as the other was coming out through the skin. At first the new port was fine but now for about a year everytime its accessed, 6 hours later I start running very high fevers that last somtimes up to 2 weeks going up and down. 2 weeks ago the same thing happened I got blood work done and had it flushed then that night I woke up around 1am and called for my mom as I felt so sick we checked my temp. and it was 104.6 my mom got me tylenole and ice packs to bring it down quickly. The doctors just cant seem to come up with a cause for it. Several times I was hospitalized thinking it was an infection but every test came back normal, so what could possibly be happening. I do love my port as iv access is totally out of the question, I just wish what I could do to keep from getting sick when its accessed.
Does anyone else have a port and maybe have an idea what could be wrong or something I should be looking into?

Happy Holidays

Sam

When you are running a fever do they check a cbc count (complete blood count)? If so, are you wbc's elevated (white blood cells)? If so, which ones? Kind of technical but it's helpful to know. If they are thinking that you might have an infection from the port, the only way to know for sure is to culture the far tip of it which could be "seeding" your body with an infectious agent. When you are running a fever, do they give you antibiotics to keep the fever down? Full disclosure- I'm not an MD but these are the questions I'd be asking.

Ya they do check blood work several times a day but everything comes back fine. My white blood count is never high is anything sometimes it comes back very low which baffles them. Even though my blood work comes back fine they still put me on high IV anitbiotics to be on the safe side. I was acutually wondering if its the heprin if I could be reacting to it as I looked up side affects for it and fevers are one. I just wish I could find out so it doesnt happen every month when it gets accessed.
Thanks for all the help!

Sam
