Confused what to do when I'm a klutz

I have a small problem. I've started making buckwheat heating pads and was putting a gamma lid on a storage bucket today and in what was clearly not one of my finest moments my thumb got a good whack from the handle of the mallet right behind the second knuckle.

My arm has never been as bad as my leg, the difference is a pilot light to a bonfire but it's still always painful and sometimes difficult to use. Knowing what I know now I didn't ice it. I've broken and dislocated countless fingers as a kid and teenager and I don't think it's broken, it just isn't swollen enough and I have too much motion in it. But it hurts to move or use at all and suddenly everything hurts. Slipping my arm in my snuggie, air, water, doesn't matter, whatever touches my thumb hurts and it radiates up my arm.

Since I shouldn't ice it, what DO I do? Also, I'm a klutz, so this isn't the last time I'm going to do something this stupid no matter how careful I am. I thought several times about going to an instacare, but I figured the doctors there are probably just morons who will want to ice me so I saved my money.
