Hi all, I was doing really well the first three days after surgery and now on day four I have terrible acid like burning under my breastbone again. I can eat things still that I couldn't before without attacks like ice cream, but am freakin out because I still have acid. I am going to see if I have ulcer. I was just wondering if anyone has an idea if that's what I have too. I just want to feel better. Is it my rsd attacking surgical site? I don't mean to be whining, but I'm scared and I don't want to go to ER. They don't seem to be of much help to me lately. Thanks for listening. Hi Renee,

As AZDi says, get in to see someone as soon as you can. It's very unlikely, but I know from my own surgery (although it didn't happen to me) that you can have a slight leak from the bile duct while things are still raw and healing. It might well not be that, but it's definitely not worth leaving something like that so soon after surgery. Any decent doc would want to know. Contact the surgeon who did the op for you and let him/his secretary know - they might be able to reassure you. If you can't contact them quickly, then see a doc.

It could be your surgical site shouting a bit while it's healing, it could be a nerve in the area just being a bit annoyed because of the CRPS (which does after all make all our nerves a bit hyper), it could be a surgical complication. The only way of finding out which is by talking to a doc - preferably the surgeon, as the most likely cause of this is something to do with the surgery.

Try not to panic - I know anything new like this is very scary, especially so soon after a procedure, but the chances are its nothing awful. You've had a tough time in that area for a while - your body is still very sensitive there, and it doesn't take much to annoy it! Just eat and drink small amounts at a time today, of pretty bland, basic and naturally low fat food, just until you've got some reassurance.

I'll be thinking of you, and hoping this is a minor irritation only. Let us know what happens....but contact your surgeon today and at least leave an urgent message for him. He'd want to know.

Thank you AZ-Di, Bram and Russell. I was really scared about the acid in my stomach and up until about four in the morning. Just knowing you cared enough to try to help me meant so much. It helps to know that I'm not alone and have friends who have rsd who truly understand not just the physical but psychological toll it takes on us. I called my surgeon this morning and got the nurse. She said that I shouldn't have acid, but it might be acid reflux and to try prilosec OTC med. My husband is going to pick some up for me after he double checks with pharmacist to make sure it is okay to take with all my other meds. The nurse said if it doesn't help in a few days, to call my endocronologist to get an endoscopy to check for a possible ulcer. Anyway, that's the scoop. I still feel acid but am drinking milk (and eating ice cream) until my husband comes home with the prilosec. Hopefully that will do the trick. If not, I will go back to endo dr and get endoscopy. I was going to anyway after surgery along with the other oscopy. yuk. Better safe than sorry. I still feel sick, but am calmer now because I know it's not my surgery gone wrong, like so many other surgeries have for me in the past. Thank you all again for caring enough to try to help me and I will take all your info to the endo dr with me when I schedule my endooscopy. I hope you are all having a painfree and happy day today. PS - Eev, pls don't be hesitant to get your gallbladder surgery because I was scared of the acid in my stomach. I believe it's totally unrelated and even though I have acid, I still feel much better without my gallbladder and what seemed to be about a hundred gallstones. I can eat things I couldn't before like ice cream. If your dr says to do it, then if I were you, I would. It's of course up to you. And second opinions from other drs are good to have too. I don't think my rsd is the reason for the acid either, but will double check with endo dr soon and let you know. So try no to worry. You'll be okay. I had this surgery last year and was freaked out at times too. This surgery upsets the balance of the GI tract as bile is no longer stored in the gallbladder and is dumped into small intestine instead. It took me a few months to tune the system, and I too had reflux issues..burning under the breastbone.. burning back of throat. Fortunately for me my back up plan worked-
licorice(in a tablet) and aloe juice 3x a day, if that doesn't work then I add gaviscon (OTC) and eventually go to my pharmaceutical sucralfate. Of course you must be checked out by a doc to be sure there isn't an ulcer or other issue, but try not worry too much! You just had surgery, your body is in pain and need of rest... Please focus on the healing energy. I will pray with you for your complete recovery, and I'm grateful your gallstones are gone.

Thanks so much Hana for the great advice and comforting words. I will try the licorice and aloe juice. I love licorice jelly beans. Too bad I can't take them instead of tablet lol, but I will try the tablets. Also I'll check into the gavisocon. Try to talk with your gastroenterologist he might recommended a strong anti acid to prevent heartburn, I suffers of gerds for so any years nexium was my best choice kind of pricy Burgos to the nexium web side and get. A coupon if the dr give a prescription,remember is only been a couple days only it may be normal ,try to speak with a Durand don't get more scare,keep your calm ,remember our flare ups are more neurological stress triggers,be patient and hope you get better soon,hope that's help,call your md ASAP,we hope you ghee best recovery be patient. ,we are all here for you,blessings

Hi Renee, try not to freak out honey.I have GERD too and have learnd how to monitor my food to feel better. Is it possible you went a bit overboard with foods you couldnt eat for so long due to gallbladder issue? You mentioned bacon and milk - I can't eat either one of those! Get back to basics - lots of unprocessed plant foods. Feel better soon ~Lottie

Eev, thanks for the great adice. My husband picked up priolsec otc today, but I think I am going to wait until I talk to my gastro dr on monday. Thanks again for caring and I'm trying to stay calm today. I hope you are feeling better and that your surgery helps you. Mine did, but I still have acid. I was hoping surgery would get rid of both gallbladder and stone attacks and acid. It at least got rid of one, but I have to take one thing at a time. I still think I had to get surgery.
