Thanks to everyone who replied. I appreciate your support. We've been traveling six days now and I only lost my composure once. Trying to negotiate 700 year old cobblestone streets in a wheelchair and the occassional walking with a cane is very challenging. Ramps are hard to find, handicapped signage is non-existent, but the Italian people have been warm and gracious, willing to pitch in to help.

Lottie, what parts of Italy are you visiting? I very much want to go to Italy. My Grandfather is from Santa Caterina in Calabria--southern Italy. A mountain village 2200 feet up, over looking the mediterranean. My wife has RSD and your experience may help us make the trip.

Places I'd like to visit is--(south to north) Greek temples in central Sicily, Santa Caterina. Tropea, pompeii and herculaneum, Rome-----oh hell, the whole country.

Have a great trip!!!

If you want to PM me we can chat more on the particulars..Italy is a beautiful country and the italians have gone out of their way to be accomodating of my mobility challenges. Let me know if you would like some tips.

This very VERY inspiring!! I am soooo glad you went out and took a risk!!!

I know it might take longer to do things, and you might miss out on some other things, and when you get home it will be a time for recovery......But!

There is nothing that can take away that feeling of accomplishment!! You will have some cherished memories forever!! Plus.....the best part! It wont be as hard the next trip to where ever your heart leads you!!!

Ecstatic that you are living life on your terms!!
