Talking Appetite

On another thread there is a discussion of Neurontin and other medications giving people sugar cravings.

It's really interesting for me to see these posts of "munchies." I have the opposite problem. For about the last three to four years, I have had no appetite for the majority of the time. It's not nausea or anything like that, I just don't feel like eating. My wife would get mad at me for not eating much, but I was basically eating simply because I knew I needed to.

I still love to cook and bake, and there are times that I enjoy the taste of a well-made dinner. But I sure don't eat as much as I should, unless I deliberately make myself.

I lost 45 lb in about 5 months and needed a whole new wardrobe. Even the doctors told me to watch my weight. I have since stabilized, but I still eat only because it's time to sit down and dine with the family.

I am on so many different medications, and they have changed a lot (because of experimentation) since this started, but the reduced appetite stays the same.

Any "munchie" people want to get together and see if we can work out an average?

I Over Eat And I Do Not Think It Is Med Related, It Is Just A Comfort Thing That I Have Done For Years When I Am Stressed. I Did Not Notice Any Difference With My Neurontin And I Have Been On It For Years. Food Does Not Tast As Good As It Used To Though. I Always Expect It To Taste Great And It Doesn't. It Is Just Okay.

Hi Mike! After reading your story, this reminded me of my not having no apetite what so ever! My husband kept saying;" ya have to eat"!! my oldest son, said;"mom, your getting so skinny"! I didn't want to get thin.. thin. I was really not hungry, not even for snacks. I ate because I, like, you sat and dined with the family. now, that I am on the neurotin, I eat like crazy. I now have to MAKE myself NOT want to eat.. weird!! Love, Desi

Hi Bassman I hope you are feeling and eating better now.

I have serious appetite isues too... they make Michael crazy. He was a french chef, and if HE can't make something worth eating, then nothing will help, lol. But I can rarely work up enough of an appetite to dig in and enjoy the way I used to.

If your Dr.s are truly worried about you losing weight, then have them prescribe Marinol... it's a synthetic pot pill that WILL give you the munchies. I have to take my full days dose all at once to get that effect, but it's great when it happens. I do nothing but munch out for several hours, lol.

You could also try the Boost, Ensure route. Those liquid meals really work for me. If I quit drinking them, I drop weight like crazy. Warning: cats LOVE Boost, especially the vanilla flavored one, lol. I may not be gaining all that much weight, but Squeakers sure was, until I quit giving her much.

Joan,
I know what you mean about food not tasting good. I'm like you.love to eat,,,of course, as I've been in bed or a wheelchair for almost 2 years. anything I ate just made me gain weight. I'm now about 50 lbs overweight..Since I started on the neurontin I've actually lost weight. It's just not worth it to eat. Went out to shop and decided to grab a bite out. Didn't want to eat a whole hamburger. ate about half and tossed the rest. I will say the choc. milkshake was ok..Not as good as I thought I should be, but I did finish it off..lol..as long as I have my flavored coffee in the morning, homemade, I'm fine.

Yes, I have used things like this to take along to work. I can sit at my desk and sip. It's better for me than the coffee that I have around all day.

It's a good thing I decided to never give my dog table scraps or he would be FAT!

I also need to pay attention to diet because I have type II diabetes. It's very mild, but another consideration in what and how I eat.

I am no loger losing much -- I have stayed about the same.

Thanks all,

Mike
