I usually retreat to my bedroom which is warm, quiet and dark. I have my little "flare box" that has some scented candles and a small lavender scented heat pad that I can toss in the microwave for a minute.
If my husband is around he will light the candles and warm up my heating pad while I lay down and play my relaxing music. I place the heating pad usually behind my neck or sometimes place it on my forehead but I make sure it is not too warm. I try to focus on the music and my breathing in an attempt to focus on something other than the pain.
This doesn't take away the pain but I find it makes it more manageable. Everyone has different ways to manage/deal with pain/flares and I found I had to try a few different techniques to find one that works. I also find that keeping an open mind and realistic expectations help too. Good luck!
