Default gabapentin

Why is there weight gain with gabapentin? I am taking 800mg 4times a day. Is this a high dose? Neurologist put me on it, and it has helped RSD in my foot. I am not eating more, but the weight just keeps gaining. Does it slow down metabolism? I am also taking elavil 25 mg, and Ibuprophen 800mg 3 times a day. I have had RSD for a year now. I am walking a short distance several times a day. Thank you for being here and understanding.
gratefully

Hi Zinnia,

I don't have a full answer on this but some of the weight gain is just fluid retention that it causes. I was on a small dose and stopped because it lowered my mood. Once I quit taking it I dropped 5 pounds within a week.

I dislike taking gabapentin and I am looking forward to the day I no longer need it. Unfortunately, it helps with electrical pain, but it does cause bloating.

Be careful with the ibroprufen. I damaged my stomach lining taking less than you are. If you have swelling try the Bowen Technique and LDN.

Thank you Bio and Littlepaw for your response. My ankles are swollen. Gabapentin does help with the electrical pain, it got me walking again, and I am able to sleep better now, so not really wanting to go off of it.

The bloating is miserable, I am finding that eating yogurt a couple of times a day is helping with that. I am even having some fun making my own yogurt, using a little plain Dannon yogurt and milk. I have had this yogurt maker for years and had not really used it.

I really don't know where I am to go from here. It is frustrating living in a small town. We have a few doctors that come here and I am grateful for that, as I can not drive very far. The foot doctor was awful, I don't even want to think about how he treated me, the neurologist is treating me now. He is concerned about my stomach, taking that much Ibuprophen, and that is all he said. Maybe after Christmas I can start taking less Ibuprophen, and resting when it hurts. Thank you both I am so grateful to have found others who understand.
