Default Pain Medication

HI Everyone.

Say, I have a question.

I am currently taking Neurontin (but will be changing to Lyrica), a muscle relaxer, benadryl and lidocaine patches. I have oxycodone at home for pain, but I feel really sick if I take it. I had a reaction the last time I tried to take it where I had uncontrollable muscle flailing. They think it might have been a reaction to the benadryl - where it possibly stays in your system longer than the 4-6 hours of immediate relief.

So, my question is this:

I really feel like I need something stronger to take at night that will knock me out and control the pain at night. What do you guys take where you don't feel really sick? Do you take an additional medication for the nauseousness?

It seems that either I'm in pain or I take the medication and feel sick for 4-6 hours or more. So, I've been in pain not wanting to risk a reaction...

Any comments would be much appreciated.

Smirk taking medication for sleep

Hi! I am Tracy and new to this community, but I just started taking a medication to help me sleep at night. I started taking trazedone 50 mg a night. I have taken it for about a month and a half and have learned that I can't take it any later than 9:30 pm central time or I feel like I have a hangover the next day. I will get a severe migraine and feel nautious most of the day until late afternoon. I have had some decent luck with it so far as far as sleeping better, but I do wake up once in a while, but not as often as I use to. I don't know how long it will work but at least I am getting some sleep right now.

I am concerned with taking the benadryl with the other meds. I know some of the pills I take say not to take an antihistamine with them. Also, some cough/cold medicines say not to take certain inhibitors with them. Please be careful, as I am not on either neurontin or lyrica I cannot comment on either.

Hi again, Dealingwithtos! I am on neurontin and I don't really think that you should be taking the benadryl. I was on the Lyrica, but that knocked me out(75mg) for a day and a half!! some people can tolerate it.. me?? NEVER AGAIN!! are you drinking anything with caffeine in it at bedtime ? after 5:00 p.m.?? If you are stop it! LOL ;0) seriously, I too wanted to be "knocked out' from the pain, so my Dr. suggested to up my neurontin.. and it does help. I suggest that ya talk this over with your doc. sweetie!! good luck dear! Love ya! Love, Desi oh, have you asked your Dr. for clonopin? xanax? knocks me right out along with the "upped dose of neurontin" along with the rest of the junk.. Morphine(30 mg. time released pill I am on too)

Default night

I tried all sorts of anti-depressants after getting RSD for pain relief and for sleep. They just don't agree with my system.

I've tried quite a few things, but the Neuro changed my baclofen from one 10mg tab every 12 hours to one at 1 pm and 3 at 12 a.m. Works GREAT. Helps so much with the spasms. It didn't work well when I first started for sleep... but he said stick with it, gradually increasing dose. He said he has some patients on as much as 60 mg a day, so 40 a day for me is safe. I work 2nd shift, so I take one with my "dinner" before I go to work, and take 2-3 at night when I go to bed. If it's not a bad night, I will take 2 to start and if I am not asleep in 1-2 hours take a third.

It's been the best thing so far for me. Has really helped the spasms-- I had a terrible time with muscle spasms even before I had RSD so this has been a great med for me.

Before I went to this routine, I would average 2-1/2 to 3 hours sleep a day. Now I sleep pretty much every night 6 or 7 hours. I think getting the extra sleep has been one reason I feel better. That and the new med (for me) Namenda. It has really helped my pain. Been able to stop the high dose of topamax since starting the namenda. Don't use my RSD cream, lidoderm patches, Ultram or Vicoden nearly as often either. YEAH! And, it helps with the "fogginess" I have had with the RSD.

Hope that helps!

The one thing that helped my daughter and did not cause daytime issues was trazadone at night. Talk over options with your doctor. Benydryl is often used as OTC but not as effective and some folks do have side effects.

ANother thing she also used but can leave daytime drozzy if you take it too late is Klonopin. This is good as amuscle relaxant too. It is similar to valium.
Hope you can get sleep.,
Dianne

Hello dealingwithtos

I also couldn't handle how strong percocet was, because I was too sleepy to do things (though it knocked me out good at night), and I found darvocet is in the same family, but not as strong. So I take darvocet during the day for pain.

Currently I am not on any anti nausea meds, but feel that I should be, as I get severe nausea, abdominal pain and vomiting from the pain. I am going to ask my doctor about that. Maybe you could ask your doctor if he feels comfortable prescribing something like that for you.

Ideas for sleep: anti depressants can sometimes be used to make you sleepy enough that you will fall into a deep sleep. I am on amitriptyline, which was helping for a while, but has since worn down... grr... My doctor can increase the dosage which will sometimes help.

I hear that trazodone is really good as a sleep aid, and it also has pain relieving qualities.

Ask your doctor if any anti depressants could help you.
