Will it never end??? A month ago I applied for a Handicapped Placard for my car. I filled out the forms sent them to my doctor, she did her part, listing my RSD, etc and than I sent it off the my State Motor Vehicle Office. Massachusetts if anyone is wondering. Well yesterday I get back a denial letter. They do not recognize RSD!!!!!! A**H**les!!!!! I am mad as Hell! They added that if my doctor was to be much much more specific about my condition and if she CAN CONVINCE them that RSD is real, than they might reconsider my placard. What the???????? Is this what we all have to look forward to everytime we turn a corner? What moron is sitting in his or her office in Boston making this decision on my behalf I wonder? I don't think I will bother with it. It is just too much of a hassle. I can still walk enough to get from any parking spot to where I am going.

I think it is ironic, they do everything they can to keep people from utilizing the handicap parking spaces legitimately here and yet they do nothing to the ones who park in them illegally!!!!! That's Taxachusetts for you!!!

Hey Mark...

I live in upstate NY.. and thought it was universal for these handicapped things, but all i had to do is take the yellow form that my doc had to fill out and take it to my local town hall and they gave me the handi capp tag. ANd its good till 2011~~ ?? Could you do this also to advoid the Stinky DMV crap?? we even have temporary ones that are red that will get ya though 6 mos. I had that in the begining but then RSD took all the way over and i got my perm one. Now if i wanted the handicapped license plate .. yea i would have to go to DMV.. but i have vanity plates so i cant have them and the handicapped guy on them too.

Just a thought.. i will share my tag if i could!!

this is infuriating!.....i'm angry on your behalf......do they really think that places like MassGeneral and ClevelandClinic and the U of Penn have been fooled by the thousands of patients they've treated for this "unrecognized" disorder?.....sheeeeesh, even social security now admits that rsd is real!

i think in your position, i'd print out everything i could find (from reputable sources, of course, that the dmv would 'recognize') and send it to them!....it would make one heck of a stack, wouldn't it?....or maybe send them a few reprints every other day......or - i don't know what!!......but i'd need some kind of revenge!

we've been fighting this "rsd is real' battle for SOOOOO long now and it sounds like u r as disgusted as i am with the morons who r making it difficult for us when we try to live as normally and independently as possible.

as soon as i find my wand, i will hex them all with a month of rsd!

Because SS does not list RSD as a "listed impairment", but MS is listed, anyway your Dr. than has to submit a list of what limitations RSD has caused for them to be able to decide you need a permit. If you are able health wise to fight this unfair practice-please for all of us do so!! Otherwise they win -we lose: None of us like to think this, but there may be a day you just do NOT feel well enough to walk the extra steps to where you need to go. I am also MAD on your behalf!!!

While we are on the subject of handicapped permits, either placard or a plate, be extra careful in looking around when you get out of your car and when going back to your car. The neuro dr. here said a lot of handicapped people were being picked out and robbed because they make an easier target, sad-but so true. Just last week an elderly couple were robbed at my local food store while walking to their car. Mean,hateful people watch the handicapped spots and see who uses them and uses this information to help decide the next victim. So just be aware at all times, maybe carry pepper spray-if legal in you area- or a extra loud whistle on your keyring. It is not my intention to scare people, just to inform. Carose

i am in Massachusetts too and my doctor just wrote 'permanent nerve damage from surgery and difficulty walking' and i got mine. i guess because RSD was not mentioned, at the time i was yet to be diagnosed.
So try again. i got one that will be renewed forever ... like RSD ...

My doctor did not have to write a diagx for PEnna. He just had to write that the arms or legs were unable to carry or walk X amoaunt of distance. Also, there is a spot that the police office could fill in if you use a wheelchair or walker., or the disability is visable to them.

Better off if possible not putting the diagx and ust list disable to walk or carry items..
Appeal the action!!!

The first time I got my disabled placard I went down to the DMV myself, with the information the doctor had given me in the form . Human interaction is always an important step ,especially the first time . You can explain things to a clerk( gov. employee ) who has no medical back round that they may not understand at all without you.It could mean the difference between getting the card and not.
Now they just send me 2 or 3 year renewal placards in the mail like clockwork.

I agree with the other posters who said that your doctor should write your limitations in the form, not just a diagnosis-remember who is reading this information - .
I believe I first got a card for severe TOS.
Now most DMV workers don't know a thing about thoracic outlet syndrome ,nor was it listed a an "acceptable handicapped disorder" at that time ,but my neurologist wrote that I was unable to carry anything for short distances, or walk for any length of time and carry my arms

The description of my limitations was much more beneficial than the name of the disease itself.I spoke briefly with the clerk and passed

Please try again Mark and maybe go down yourself with a more descriptive analysis of your limitations in the form .I am sure your Doctor will be more than happy to help you out.
