Default local horror

i am having an awful night....i'm vacillating back and forth; first, i want to see the news on tv, then i have to walk away from it.....school violence worries me all the time, since my hub teaches in a public high school, but this latest outrage touches close to home in other ways as well.

i am so upset by the amish schoolhouse shooting....the town where it happened is only about an hour away......i LIVE in the same kind of town.....there is a little one-room amish schoolhouse on my street, about a half-mile away.......i drive past there all the time, and see the kids outside playing....little boys with their suspenders and straw hats.....little girls with rosy cheeks and braids.

these people r my neighbors.....and very good neighbors at that.....they keep to themselves and cause no trouble.....they work their farms, sell the produce at roadside stands, have stands at the local farmer's market.....the children r, without fail, polite and helpful, tho a bit shy with outsiders.....NO child deserves a shooter in their school, but amish girls????....this may be the most inoffensive group of people in the world, and i am so angry that some sick, twisted mind could consider doing this.

i know that there should be some compassion for the gunman, who had to be seriously unstable, and even more for his wife and children who r victims as surely as the dead girls and the dying children in local hospitals, but at the moment, all i can feel is horrified, truly horrified, that anyone could even think about committing a crime like this.

my grandchildren r in school, and i suppose i don't like being reminded that these horrors can happen anywhere, even out here, out in the boondocks.....if it were in my power, they wouldn't happen anywhere, ever again......until that wonderful day arrives, please hold a good thought for all the victims of school violence everywhere.

Liz: I join you in mourning the loss of those sweet, innocent girls. I am not watching the news tonight. The sadness is just too much to bear.

I used to live near Amish families. When I sold my farm, an Amish family bought it. Once I got a flat tire from running over a horseshoe nail in front of my house. You are right - I have never seen an Amish child who did not display impeccable manners. Even the children are hardworking and helpful even to their "English" (meaning non-Amish) neighbors.

I cannot understand why there is so much violence today. I know there have been violent people since the beginning of history but there seems that there is a larger percentage of people that are angry.

My thoughts are with the Amish community at this very very sad time.

hi liz, i too can't fathom the reasoning behind these sensless deaths.........

we have amish families near our home upnorth........they are the nicest, hardest working group of people.

my heart goes out to their community.........

my daughter also teaches in a public school. it is a very scary thought that our kids and grandkids are no longer safe..........anywhere.......................

Oh Liz,

What a terrible thing to happen. It's made headline news here in Hong Kong. Something chillingly deliberate about the whole thing, yes, horror.

Years ago, visiting Tasmania, I narrowly escaped being mown down by a gunman gone amok at Port Arthur. Just left the place, got in the car, 10 minutes later turned on the radio news - Bam! There's something extremely terrifying about the random nature of these ghastly events but much more so when they're close to home - and, in this case, to such undeserving folk. But then no one deserves that fate.

Try to think about something else for a bit. You know, think about it but don't dwell...read a book...watch TV... but take care, please,
all the best.

Default comes with the times

The sad thing is this type of thing comes with the times, and if that isnt bad enough it will get worse. Things will worsen until the time of his return, then when he takes his believers to dinner, and removes all good in the world it will get even worse then you can imagine.

If your a believer than look up because he is drawing near, if your not become one, or start soul searching the why's in your life, and life in general. That way maybe you too can believe what jesus did for us.

There is great things coming I believe in our lifetime for believers, and I for one am looking forward to them. I do pray he shorten the days of his coming so there would be less of this sensless type of killing that is going on all around the world.

I hope this doesnt get anyone mad at me, but this is how I see it. I will be praying for the families of the children.

It seems like our kids aren't safe anywhere. You send them to school, head off to work thinking everything is peachy, but then these horrid acts. And in an Amish community, i would never have expected. My prayers to all.

Default so much trauma

I'm sorry this senseless act happened, and to such a peaceful community of loving. God-fearing people.

Others have said it all so well here, I won't repeat it.

Allen, you took the words right out of my mouth. It goes to show we could all pray for the world in general EVERY day.

I was quite impressed when I heard one Amish gentleman say that the community was not going to dwell on what happened, but move forward, which is what The Word tells us to do -- press on for the prize. I too am looking forward to that some day.

I feel the same about having my grandchildren in school, but we can't live in fear. We now come to know it can happen anywhere.
I will mourn with you all for awhile and then move on. I just wish I could think of something I personally could do to help prevent these sorts of things.

Since not everyone learns it at home, maybe they need a class in school (what do you call it when the school all gets together for a meeting?) or a regularly scheduled meeting
in the school for ALL kids about the importance of being nice,
not bullying & teasing others & what it could lead to.

Even butterfly on the old forum went thru that.
Have a way to confidentially report when they see it happening, because it is now and always has been a problem.
Like the ACLU would allow that !!

Who ever thought it would come to security guards or police guarding our schools??

Peace to all,
Pat

Default Burns Me Up!!

If the freaking States and Government and people like Tipper Gore (yeh she should get Mother of the Year) would keep their noses out of parents raising their children, Parents would have more control over the well being of their children.

Hyperthetical case in point! Parent disciplines child at home for doing something wrong. Child gets angry enough to go to school and tell the teacher. The next thing you know Social Services is banging on the parents door accusing them of child abuse. And wether or not it is true the parent still goes through hell trying to prove their innocence.

Granted there are legitimate cases of child abuse where children do need to be protected, but I am totally against it being a blanket law. It takes total control away from the parents and the next thing you know the children are taking weapons to school, etc.

Have I just made any sense? I think the blue pill just kicked in or maybe its the red ones, I'm not sure . I better get off the computer. My heart goes out to all who are dealing with the recent tragedies in the schools and those poor Amish children. Everyone try and keep the faith and lets all hang in there together!!! Chin Up!!!
