Hi everyone! I have been away a few days, or I would have already been a part of this discussion I'm glad this subject has been brought back up. If you search for medical marijuana on this forum, you will see it has been discussed in almost ALL the different forums. The medicinal properties of mmj are not limited to pain relief. I have more problems than rsd, unfortunately. My biggest being I am also an aids patient. The effect of mmj on my ability to eat (and keep food down) is enormous. I am currently using Marinol, a synthetic substitute for mmj that is legal everywhere. The us gov't okay's it because they can control it, unlike mmj. But I'll leave the discussion about my views on the gov't and major pharmaceutical co.s for a later post, lol! As for pain control, the Marinol's are not so good They do help the other pain drugs work better, but I still have to take the same number of pharmies. The mmj is MUCH better. Vaporizing is the best method yet to be devised for consuming mmj but the machine is pretty expensive. The next best method, imo, is eating it. You do not just stick the mmj in any recipe, in it's true form... you either eat it raw in a salad, or you make butter. Once the butter is made, you strain out all the stalks and seeds (if there are any, you might be better off planting them instead of using them in butter, lol). You get a green butter out of it that can be put to many uses, from brownies to cinnamon toast. I wish that I could go back to using the "real thing" instead of taking the synthetic, but the laws are clear. As I am currently on the gov't dole <SIGH>, I can't afford to take any chances. You will lose your SS benefits if you get caught by the feds. The chances of that are slim to none, of course... but I am an aids/rsd/epilepsy patient who needs her medicaid to stay alive. But all this makes me miss northern Ca. too much. I have never felt so at peace or closer to God than I did there. Humboldt county is in the "Emerald Triangle", the major growing area. It is a beautiful place, and one in which a mmj patient can walk out in public smoking a joint. I have seen many a grey-haired grandma light up as they leave the grocery store.

Hi all,
I don’t own a white lab coat nor am I a collector of rectal thermometers, but I actually did conduct a single-subject study about marijuana and pain relief. The study was made possible by my law-n-order son (who gave up a career as a cop in order to make money), who was so concerned about my weight loss that he bought some pot and gave it to me. He would never use it himself. I don’t credit the pot for the fact that I began to gain weight, but I think it was/is at least partly responsible. I didn’t believe that it helped my pain at all and said that so the conclusion of my parody of a very serious topic. I erred. One of the problems with a single-subject study is that it can’t really be accepted as representative of any population, and one of the problems with self-experimentation with pot is that the drug causes your mind to wander and lose sight of the purpose of the research. In this instance, my conclusion wasn’t representative of anyone – not even me – because I posted it before I had the chance to analyze what had just taken place. I take ten to twelve 5mg oxycodone every day; an average of one every 2 hours. It is the only way to control a specific pain that extends across my lower back and which is so terrible that I wouldn’t put up with it if it couldn’t be controlled. This pain always returns within 2 to 3 hours, and it wakes me up. I haven’t slept four straight hours in more than 3 years. Anyway, at the end of my study, and after posting it here, I noticed that the pain had returned. Then I noticed that I hadn’t taken an oxy in 4-1/2 hours. I have not lasted that long between oxys in forever. I don’t know whether the pot had actually relieved the pain, or whether I just hadn’t noticed it; all I know is that I never last longer the 2-1/2 to 3 hours without having to take an oxy, and it had been 4-1/2 hours. I enjoy being high, but only once-in-a-while. I can’t imagine trying to function, much less write about RSD, if I used pot 24/7. I think it would stop being enjoyable. So, Stephen, I’m very interested in the almost incredible changes vaporized pot has made in your life. It won’t affect me, as I live in Kansas, the state that recently required schools must give equal time to creationism and evolution, and banned science books that didn’t discuss creationism as a scientific theory. (Lest I start a war over that, I believe God created Adam long after he allowed humans to develop the time-tested way. He gave Adam a soul). Anyway, a state populated by people who think they know exactly how God would have them rule the godless is not a place where pot is going to be legal in the near-future; but there is hope in some states. There is hope that a different President may sign an executive order telling the DEA that their job is stopping illegal drugs, NOT trying to catch doctors who think their patients need more opiates than a pencil pusher in D.C. wants to believe. There is hope that what is helping you could help hundreds of thousands of other pain sufferer’s live happier lives. So, Stephen, I hope that you are physically up to the task of providing us with as much information as possible about this new method of pain relief. Telling a few dozen people about it might not sound like it would make any difference in a country nearing a population of 300 million, but it’s a start; and every journey begins with a first step…Vic

Hey Vicc, loved your "study" report I haven't laughed like that in way too long. Thank you! I thought I might be able to help you on several points you made in your last post. I hope you don't mind, it's not like I am trying to shove mmj down your throat. I just want you (and everyone else) to know a few things. Quote: "I don’t credit the pot for the fact that I began to gain weight, but I think it was/is at least partly responsible." Oh, it absolutely IS a major factor in your weight gain. That's why the dr.s give aids patients the synthetic version, Marinol... to get you to eat and keep your weight up. "For example... me. When I am legally allowed to have mmj, I weigh 100 lbs. When I am not allowed, my weight hovers around 85, even with Marinol and Boost (a nutritionally correct meal in a shake kind of thingy). People look at me like I'm a meth user... I have been called a tweaker to my face. The up side of this need to eat is two-fold: Not only do you keep your weight up, but you support our nation's economy by making "munchy runs" to the nearest mini-mart! Quote: "I enjoy being high, but only once-in-a-while. I can’t imagine trying to function, much less write about RSD, if I used pot 24/7. I think it would stop being enjoyable." Being high is fun, no doubt about it. But the point of mmj is to relieve pain, not get high off it. I'm sure you don't take extra oxy's to get high. With practice (LOL) you will learn how to tell when you have had enough to "relieve pain" but not get too high to think straight. You seem to have the same results I do... using mmj makes my meds last longer and work better, but using only mmj is not as effective as the combo. As a matter of fact, you should all know that different types of mmj have different side effects. Some give you what is called "couch-lock"... you are too high to move. Others perk you up and give you more energy, making leaving the house possible. Some relieve pain more than others... and rarely, but it does happen, one type will increase your pain by making your blood pound. At least, it has happened to both me and my "hubby" in the past. But I'm not knocking getting high once in a while, either, lol. Sometimes it is good for a person to be too relaxed to do anything other than contemplate the state of the world their lives, their spirituality, whatever. You can use it as a spiritual aid, you see... you don't have to veg out in front of the t.v. eating a whole bag of Cheetos. That's fun too, though. Michael says to tell you all that if he hadn't been high, he would never have learned how to code websites, lol! And he's danged good at it, he is starting his own web-design company (wish him luck). Quote: "Telling a few dozen people about it might not sound like it would make any difference in a country nearing a population of 300 million, but it’s a start; and every journey begins with a first step" Absolutely correct! But it doesn't have to stop here at NeuroTalk, either. I play in several different gaming leagues on different sites. If anyone here visits chat lines, then they have the opportunity to spread the word too. People everywhere are the same: they complain when they are in pain! So, when the discussion turns to, and it inevitably does, pain meds... that's when I jump into the discussion. People everywhere, from all walks of life, are eager to hear more about it. Of course there are some who are dead-set against it. When some 75 year old Grandma (or an aids/rsd patient like me) tells people she wishes she had some to try, or that she has tried mmj and it works... people are usually willing to hear the truth. Many end up saying that they know someone with chronic pain, and they'll ask them about it. Others say immediately "my Mom has cancer, I'm going to get her some". Well, this post is long enough already, lol. I just hopes that discussing this helps some of us in some way.
