I have read some of your post on meditation. That is something I have never tried but really think I might benefit from it. Are there any books or something to get a beginner started? Tips/techniques? Any information you can share will be greatly appreciated. I think it will help me to get information from someone who does have tried and true techniques to get someone started.

Thank you so much for any info you can provide..

Hi Janet

If you read through Lisa'a thread( "Guys I 'm in trouble" I believe it is called ( sorry if I am wrong) - particularly page 2 and 3 you will find your answer's

Between posts written by Daylilyfan,fMichael and myself all your beginner meditation needs should be met and then some .You will have some homework . However it will lead to a good calm life .
As Jules says she no longer fears pain.
I too have no judgements good or bad on this new life ..it just is and I am going with it.
It is so much easier than fighting what is - going with the flow.
I just accept the way I feel each day and move(or not) from there.
Worrying will not change the outcome.

You can start with reading a couple of good books such as Wherever You Go There You Are by Jon Kabat Zinn ; Shinzen Youngs book as Jules mentions Breaking Through the Pain and Thich Nhat Hahn.
Michael mentions MSBR - Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction which is a type of meditation based therapy which got him into this whole game

Some people find it usefull to buy a CD to guide them through their first meditations . You can pick some up at your local alternative ( airy fairy ) bookstore . You do not lose your sense of humor when you meditate!!!!
Some communities offer beginners meditation groups for free. You can check in your local paper.

If you just want to do it- do it..
Depending on your disability ( I can't sit for long periods of time so I must meditate lying down- very challenging not to sleep!)
Take some time out each day to stop your mind - clear your mind however it feels to you to remain calm and try not to think - think of nothing - harder than it sounds and more rewarding than it sounds too!
As I mentioned in another post - start with a 10 minute commitment each morning and evening - something you can meet that won't set you up for failure - kind of like a diet -don't make a comittment you can't meet.
Soon enough you will be wanting and needing more.

Others please feel free to add your comments to this much abridged list.

Much peace and Good Luck
