Default how do u use a cane?

i know enough to use the cane on the side opposite the injury (thanks jose!) but i can't figure out how to judge the height of the cane.

my kids got me a cane as a joke for my 60th b'day but now that i'm having so much trouble with my right foot, i want to use it when i really need it......the problem is that the cane is HUGE.....it would probably be just the right height for mark? sybil? tall one? short one? .......but at 5'3" i could almost tuck it under my chin....so how do i figure out how much to saw off?

anyone have any ideas?.....thx for any help anyone can offer.
