Increased Risk Of Kidney Stones In Patients Using Drug Prescribed For Migraines And Seizures

Topiramate (Topamax), a drug commonly prescribed to treat seizures and migraine headaches, can increase the propensity of calcium phosphate kidney stones, researchers at UT Southwestern Medical Center have found.

A study - the largest cross-sectional examination of how the long-term use of topiramate affects kidney-stone formation - appears in the October issue of the American Journal of Kidney Diseases.

The following warning will now be added to prescribing information:

"A syndrome consisting of acute myopia associated with secondary angle closure glaucoma has been reported in patients receiving TOPAMAX. Symptoms include acute onset of decreased visual acuity and/or ocular pain. Ophthalmologic findings can include myopia, anterior chamber shallowing, ocular hyperemia (redness) and increased intraocular pressure. Mydriasis may or may not be present. This syndrome may be associated with supraciliary effusion resulting in anterior displacement of the lens and iris, with secondary angle closure glaucoma. Symptoms typically occur within 1 month of initiating TOPAMAX therapy. In contrast to primary narrow angle glaucoma, which is rare under 40 years of age, secondary angle closure glaucoma associated with topiramate has been reported in pediatric patients as well as adults. The primary treatment to reverse symptoms is discontinuation of TOPAMAX as rapidly as possible, according to the judgment of the treating physician. Other measures, in conjunction with discontinuation of TOPAMAX, may be helpful" (FDA).

This med as all medications have side effects which may cause problems in some people.

Topomax is being used as an anti-seizure medication for RSD/CRPS. It sure does help with the "Electrical Jolts" or seizure type pain that we have in our limbs.

Topomax is being prescribed for migrines and for weight loss. And think it's a whole lot better than than it's partner Neu"rotten."

Topomax has other side effects. My have hair Loss, and my cognitive skills have been effected.

And for what it is worth, I still have pain. But I'd be a whole lot worse if I wasn't on Topomax. If I do happen to skip a dose, the jolts come back with a vengence. I wish I could tolerate a higher dose of Topomax but my memory and speech problems would increase, and that wouldn't be good.

Everyone has to make the decision for themselves and have regular blood tests to be sure that your body is tolerating your medications. Right now, I have blood tests done every 3 months by my internist.

Bottom line, Topomax is a trip but it's better than Neu"rotten"

I am on the Neu"rotten" its called gabipentin on the bottle I got here.. and baclofen and trazadone and citralopram.. an suposto be takin nitrogliceryn under my toung once in a bit.. I dont know what is worse or what realy helps anymore..

Doc wants to put me on topomax after we resolve the heart issues.

yep - kidney stones and headaches and hair loss and don't take it if family history of closed-angle glaucoma. All well known and well-proven. The question is: is it worth it to you once you try it? I've used it for bipolar and it works. the bad news for me was hair falling out in clumps! sooooo embarassing during work meetings!! not to mention traumatic for my plumbing. But it has knocked down my pain from fibromyalgia a couple of points which was a totally unexpected side effect. I never would have known this if I hadn't held my breath and tried it, despite the very scary warnings.
