Heart Why ms cotin might not be lasting for some

I just got off the phone with my pharmacist and we were discussing why my extended release morphine doesn't last for the 12 hr it is supposed to. He gave me some good info: 1 in you have issue with absorbing in your intestines (like I do with my irritable bowel, it can either slow down or increase how fast it is absorbed making it last for less time. 2: If you smoke it increases your metabolism and makes the med go in your body faster and not allowing the full 12hrs. 3: it could be just plain old tolerance. He said some people on the ER have to end up taking it every 6hrs even. So don't think it is all just tolerance it could just be the way your body processes the med! I am personally going to talk to my pain doc about it at the next visit, I know some of you have the same problem so you might want to bring it up too.
positive thoughts for you all!!!

I had the same issue with extended release Tramadol. It was supposed to last 8 hours but it never did last that long, it was more 4-6 hours.

I'm having the same problem with Opana ER. It only seems to last about 8 - 9 hrs. I really wish it worked for the full 12. I seem my dr. this tues. and he is going to up my dose again. I'm on 20 2xa day and I think he is going to take me up to 40mg. Boy, it means another week of sleeping all the time till I get used to it. But boy, when it works it is great!

Hugs,
Mary

Don't you also have to be careful of being constipated, though? I find if I develop constipation, I feel like I've overdosed on some of mine---or the combination of mine, whichever. At any rate, I'm really careful now not to get constipated.

Thumbs up MS Cotin not lasting 12 hrs.

This is very good information
I used to be on methadone and then for some reason, probably another medicine, I started to fall asleep while doing things so my pharmacist changed me to MS. I went through terrible withdrawal When I told my pharmacist about it he said, "I don't know why I matched the doses" well mine only lasts for 8-10 hrs instead of 12 and I figured it out right away #1 my body is not reacting to the MS in the same way as the methadone. It makes me hyper not sleepy so now I am on all kinds of medicine to make me sleep! How much does he not understandI am on the lowest dose according to what I have looked up, but he won't increase it. I run a constant 7 on the scale of pain and they said that may be as good as it gets for me I can't accept that!!! Now I have OA in all my joints and my spine, two budging disks, and now it seems I may have fibromyalgia as well They left my meds the same even though I asked them to up my muscle relaxer so it has been a horrible month. I started taking Valerian root so I could stop grinding my teeth of course in my area everyone must be doing the same thing because now Walmart is out along with CVS and Rite aid. Anyway it is good to know I am not loosing my mind with the short acting long release MS Cotin:Thanks: I go and see the pharmacist on Wed the 6th as they (DR&PHARM) are reevaluating my case. I had to do my quarterly pee test and for some reason they did four tests and billed my insurance $686 of lab work! They better know what they were testing for all those charges Anyway at least your post validates my pain. Got a little winded but it has been a little upsetting.
Thanks again,
tjbird
