is there a way of knowing the median nerve is compressed/injured in your elbow vs higher up?
my hands are numb and all my tests are normal

Yes and they fall under a battery of endless electrodiagnostic testing. But there are numerous reasons for what I am assuming is, lateral hand and digit numbness and tingling. And if your origin was not readily identified, then it is probably complicated or your providers are inept. There are compressive reasons at the wrist, elbow, shoulder and neck and then there are metabolic reasons not to mention demyelinating origins. There are probably more that I am not thinking about right now but suffice to say, that there are a host of reasons for extremity symptoms and you should continue to pursue its origin! Try a different neurologist...
