Shocked

Latest Update:

"We moved into the Ronald McDonald house yesterday afternoon. It is a very nice place that is about two years old. We are in a two-bedroom suite with a full kitchen.
Claire is still very tired and not really eating. She had labs drawn this morning and her counts are coming up, just slowly. We are keeping her on IV fluids at night to help with lack of eating. We are still set to go home on Friday!
Tonight both boys will come down to see Claire for the first time in over three weeks. I am so excited and I really think it will lift Claire's spirits. She is ready to go home.
I believe the next couple of weeks we will be back and forth to Egleston for follow-up and to meet with the radiation oncologist. I feel so relieved to have this transplant behind us."

Finally.....the update we've all been praying for:

"We're home, praise the Lord! Claire was released today after her clinic appointment. Her counts are still recovering, but they are on the rise. She is getting stronger and stronger everyday. I want to sincerely thank you for praying because she has really started eating again. I am sure that this is due to all of your faithful prayers. She is still in isolation at home until her counts completely recover. If we take her out, she will have to wear a mask.

The boys are doing so well. They continue to do well in school and have been a big help to Seth around the house.

We have to go back Monday to have her counts checked again and they want to see her. We met with the radiation oncologist this morning too. She will have 3 weeks of radiation. The side effects during radiation will be minimal. She is getting low-dose radiation because Neuroblastoma is sensitive to radiation and therefore very responsive to it. The only reason radiation is even being considered is because it has shown to significantly reduce relapse in Neuroblastoma patients. The real side effects will show up later and will be cumulative. There is a few and they may or may not happen. The two biggest is heart problems which can be helped with a healthy lifestyle, and a secondary cancer later in life. They are not sure if the secondary cancers are related to radiation or if family history plays a role. Again, this may not necessarily happen to Claire. The benefit of radiation far outweighs these risk.

I have an appointment with her antibody therapy oncologist on Monday as well. We will talk about the last phase of her treatment. It seems like things are moving fast and I am so ready to get on with it. I think this is the time we will need prayer for patience and perseverance."

Thanks to everyone that included Claire in their prayers. I'm hoping this thread is now history. I pray that Claire can go about the business of just "being 3" and doing what children her age do.

God bless you all.

Latest update from Mom:

"Yesterday Claire had an appointment with the oncologist who is now overseeing the remainder of her treatment, Dr. K, to discuss antibody therapy. First, her counts have completely recovered and she does not have to wear the mask in public. She is also off any diet restrictions.

Radiation is set for February7th at Emory Winship Cancer Center which is located directly across from Egleston. For the first two weeks she will have radiation in the morning Monday through Friday and have the weekends off. The third week she will only have it Monday and Tuesday. That will be the extent of her radiation treatment. It is 12 total treatments.

Antibody therapy is going to be much harder and longer than I had expected. I will explain the schedule later, but basically it will last six months and she will be admitted to the hospital for one week per month for four of the courses and two weeks per month for two courses. Each course is spaced 28 days apart. So basically one course per month for a total of six courses. Three of the courses, I have to give her an injection under her skin for fourteen days (each course). NOT HAPPY. We have some time to play with before starting this therapy. It just needs to be started by day 85 from the transplant day (January 3, 2011)."

Radiation begins tomorrow. Please keep Claire in your prayers as she begins this phase of recovery. She's been doing exceptionally well.
