How are you doing with your back these days, Jackie, especially when you look after your granddaughter?
This was a huge concern for me when I started looking after my g-son.
My back spasms were out the roof . But, ever since I've been on Baclofen, it's not near as intense.
Do you get bad flares?

AArrggggh wrote a whole post and then was told I had timed out and had to sign in again!!! DOH!!! :D

Well Rae looking after Cara is just amazing. Yes I did have worries before I started thinking I might have bitten off more than I can chew, but you know its working out just great for me. She is walking now so she is on the floor a lot. We have a small area for a play room and she is in there a lot so she cant get into mischief if I need to get some stuff done. My husband and daughter are here at times too which is a great help as they look after her for me too.

My days arent too long either, half days Mon/Fri and then til 4.15pm Tues/Wed/Thurs......but Im absolutely loving the whole thing. I thinks its because I now feel I have a purpose in life again. Ok I cant work, this isnt work to me this is being wanted again. Im now not just the woman with the back problems but the nana looking after her granddaughter and you know what.....thats soooooo gooooood ;)

I do feel tired when she goes home and yes I do have flare up, but I just make sure that I have my SCS turned on and my meds handy. I also try to relax when she is asleep. Like in the morning when she has her nap for over an hour and a half , I try to lie on the couch and use the laptop or just read. In fact Im probably getting more rest now than before as the poor dogs dont get out for their walks on those days :D they are NOT impressed.

So Rae you are looking after Aidyn inbetween working? I bet he is a little beauty. Do you find him active, arent boys supposed to be more active than girls, although my son didnt get into too much trouble thankfully ;)

Im glad you finally have found something to help with your back spasms. I dont actually get spasms but I do get these awful searing pains down my legs and across my back. I have them now while Im lying down but I just crank up the SCS and take a couple more tablets and hope it settles down.

Im so pleased for you Rae and I hope you continue to have this relief, you definitely deserve it

Take care

Jackie

Up and Up

You, my friend, are sounding as though you are floating up and up with pain managed a bit, maybe even quite a bit better. Since you lament not being able to work, and I surmise you may have been in a daily standing position at the bank, could it be possible you might be able to take even part time sitting work at the bank. In our country, there is this employment concept regarding an employer making reasonable accomodation for an employee who, through the issue of a physical impairment cannot perform work in exactly the stance formerly accomplished. For instance, if you worked a teller cage, could a high stool be provided to allow you not to stand? Not sticking my nose in, just addressing your feeling of wanting to bank but currently being unable........

Yes, I should imagine watchcare for your preciuos grandchild is a wholesome means to LIFT the spirits as it is so for Rrae. The two of you are much the same in that way thousands of miles separated, but close in the relationship with the family and especially the little one.

Caring Hugs for the lot of you,

Good evening Mark :)

In my role in the bank I was a Relationship Manager, with a portfolio of various customers. My role was primarily meeting these clients and getting the best benefits and products for them. Unfortunately, my role was always sitting at a desk and obviously having to stand up and greet these clients. I cant sit for very long as my back and legs wont allow it, thats why I have to lie down when I want to read, watch tv etc....... I did enquire with my employer if they would try to facilitate me with work from home, but unfortunately, they dont do this at all. So on advice from the Bank Doctor, independant Dr's and my own Consultants it was agreed that I wouldnt be able to continue working in the Bank in my current position and definitely not as a teller which would entail carrying cash/coin:eek:.
It was hard at first to accept that I wouldnt have that role in the Bank and that I wasnt able to work. It took a long time to decide to leave there and be at home. As you can imagine you are tied to times in any capacity of employment. At least when Im at home I dictate the times I get up and sit down, take a break etc...........and I know I certainly wouldnt be able to hold down a job in the current environment at the pace it entails.

And hey.....dont ever feel you are 'poking your nose in' :D absolutely not, we all welcome your thoughts Mark

Better Back Store

Thank you Jackiey!! Along the lines of reasonable acommodation, my previous employer did spend about US$2200 on an electrically reclining chair for my office so I could still receive clients, recline to a comfortable posture to conduct business in person, via phone, or via computer with a built in table which afforded that compatibility. Not pushing, just food for thought were you to ultimately get "tired" of premature retirement.

Ooooooo there goes my nose again....... and I understand what your docs said, yes, stress does add to a chronic pain patient's pain profile, but.... well, I imagine you are quite good at what you did do, and could conduct biz in bank so acommodated. Sometimes, I think the stress of being underemployed....... that place in which I have taken up space for a long time can wear on a soul..... just push that around with Rrae mentioning me..... I been there and truly DONE that.

Caring,
Mark56:hug:

Oh boy is he active! He's always going in 3 directions at once! :p
He is going to daycare now, but I get to pick him up 4 days a week at 5:00pm and sit with him for about an hour each day. Precious times indeed!
He is just now taking his first steps. He was 9 mo old on Aug23.
I watched him all day this summer. I was pretty concerned about the back issue, because it was pretty tough at first. The good thing, tho, was that I dropped the rest of the weight I gained on Lyrica during this time!

The daycare came at a good time. He needed to be around the other kids. Nana was just too 'boring'

I'm glad you are doing good and that you've got the extra help.

Oh Rae isnt if just the most fantastic feeling in the world!!! :)

My goodness he is young to be starting walking  you will be running around with him in now time;)

Yes Im glad of the help otherwise I wouldnt be able to do it myself. My husband is great at the lifting etc which is marvellous. But as she is also walking its great because there is less and less lifting to be done, which is a great bonus!

Where does the time go!!!????

Ive been MIA for a few weeks, trying to get my head around some things!!

I first started seeing my Pain Consultant back in Sept '08 and it was then he put me on Amytriptelene. I took it at night........Then in December '08 I started to get this weird thing going on in my left eye. It was similiar to having your photo taken with a flash camera and the flash was still going on. I was also getting less and less vision in my left eye as the night wore on!!!

So to cut this long story VERY short, I went to my Optician and she checked out my eyes and said, NOPE not your eyes everything is ok....so I thought right well thats that then. I put up with it for over 2 years until Feb of this year and decided to go again to have it checked out. Again the Optician said all was ok with my vision etc. I then went to my GP and he referred me to an Opthamologist. She did LOTS and LOTS of tests and basically told me that all was ok with my eyes, nothing sinister, but she would like me to go to a Neurologist to see if he can spot anything else....she thought it was MIGRAINE!!!

So back in Sept I went to see a Neurologist who basically told me that my 'blurred vision' 'flashes' ' heaviness in my forehead and across my nose'(which by the way I thought was sinus) was all down to MIGRAINE. Even though I didnt always have a headache!...he told me it was from all the medication I have been taking over the past 6 years! This I thought was odd......but I let him go on. He said that because of all the meds, my biology was distorted and this was leading to me having these episodes nightly. He told me that I would have to GIVE UP  my Zydol(Tramadol) and to increase my Amytryptelene!! He said that Amyt is used worldwide for MIGRAINE but because Im taking Tramadol it wont let it do its work!!! That the Tramadol is blocking it. He said I should just STOP taking them now and go cold turkey and 'suck it up' !!!!!
I was on 25mg of Amyt and he doubled it and said he would then put me on 75mg after a month and that I could go up to 150mg - 300mg.

Well I came out of his surgery completely confused! I paid this guy €300 to tell me my PAINKILLERS were causing my 'impairments' and if I wanted to get it sorted and him to treat me, that I would have to take what he says on board and just use Amyt.

Needless to say I didnt know what way to turn. THe last thing I need is to have MORE back pain. I think I can put up with the 'impairment' moreso than the back. I went home and that night I double the Amyt. and I reduced just one Tramadol to see if I noticed the difference. Well I was zonked with the Amyt. He told me to take it 3 hours before bedtime. I was asleep after an hour for goodness sake!!! And my back was acting up too!

So I saw my Pain Dr.today (complete fluke! as I was in at an appointment for my reprogramming) He told me that Amyt can cause blurred vision, dry mouth, dry nose, so wasnt it odd that after I started taking it in Sept '08 that I should then start having these symptons in Dec.........and Ive been on Tramadol since 2005 without any problems:confused:confused so was I :D Also the Neurologist wanted me to have a CT scan to rule out anything sinister but wanted me to go to a clinic that my health insurance wont cover, But where they do, he doesnt rate them:eek: It would cost me another €300!!!!

So my Pain Dr. has organised to have a CT scan done in the PUBLIC hospital which will be in a couple of weeks or so......and he told me to reduce the Amyt. and try to wean off them. All this done in the Pain Clinic, what a bonus;)

So from tonight Im going to try to get back to 'normal' I hope...... I wont be going back to the Neurologist in December. I dont want to end up doped out on Amyt and still have back pain......nooooooooooooooooooooo

I had a reprogramming session today too and all is good in the hood for now :D......

Im sorry I havent been around for you all, but it was just getting too much for me all this messing about with my medication, I just didnt know if I was coming or going.....Im feeling a lot happier this evening!!

Sorry for the LONNNNNNNNNGGGGG post even though I was supposed to have cut it short:D

Hi Jackie,
You poor thing going through all of that and not get anywhere. Amitrityline is an old fashioned anti depressant and that's why it helps us sleep, I took it too for ages and got the dry mouth but other than that I was fine. I get dry mouth too from the Zydol and they usually knock me for six.
I'm glad you finally got to the end of it but that neuro guy seemed like a bit of a eejit and if I were you I wouldn't go anywhere near him. Can you PM me his name in case it ever comes up. Where did you see him? Thankfully alls well that ends well, it can be frightening when you have problems with your eyes or head.

Good to hear from you, we missed seeing you about (if you know what I mean)

Take care

Oh Jackie!

This is unbelievable what I'm reading! I'm so sorry you've been going thru this! I will type more as soon as I cool down a bit, but for now I'm going to go
DIG A HOLE TO PUT THAT NEUROLOGIST IN!!!:eek::eek:

Mark56 10-19-2011 11:19 PM

but.... But..... BUt..... BUT!!!!

I know, so I am stuttering..... Howsomever [aren't you glad I did not type BUT?] the thing with the digging a hole won't do much good ifn the individual placed in said state of depression [a hole] can just climb out again..... Rae? Are you up to no good????? I don't have a handle on a criminal type.... oh, wait a minute, I do too, and he does defense work! :D

Jackie, I am fully on board with Rae and with Sinead regarding the bona fides of said neurologist!!! Gee whiz, 300 Euros? That would almost buy a plane ticket from here to there [but not back again]! I am WELL acquainted with classic migraine symptoms since my darling dear wife has had to endure them since she was 2 yrs old..... and while your symptoms mock some of hers, there are other symptoms which are just missing from your profile. Anyway, I am SO SAD to learn of your difficulty with pain, these crazy symptoms, the neuro, and such!! Glad your pain doc is going to try to detect your cause.

I pray your pain comes under control and aright so you are feeling better again!! Also, I am SO GLAD for you that caring for your grandchild is such a blessing to you!! That is really VERY NICE indeed!!!! Yup.

Be well, be rested, be assured that I am praying for you,
Yup,
Mark56:grouphug:
