Arrow Penta paddle and laminectomy

I had my trial leads removed today and we're moving forward to the permanent. Originally it was thought I could get by with 2 percutaneous leads to cover my leg. However, they were very difficult to place and I had chest wall pain at low levels. Turns out I have a 'transitional vertebrae.' My coverage was very very patchy.

Long story short, I'll need a paddle... specifically the 'Penta' paddle since it has 5 electrodes across and 4 rows. I am not thrilled about a laminectomy and now having to get set up with a neurosurgeon.

What kind of recovery can I expect with the laminectomy? Any tips? My rep said typically it's an overnight stay with IV antibiotics and pain medications, go home the next day. I know the neurosurgeon will tell me more, but they never prepare you enough.

Anyone out there with a Penta paddle?

Heart Gosh

I do not know what paddle brand or style I have. My brother's speed boat has a Volvo Penta engine in it, so the word Penta connotes for me feelings of vroom.....

Anyway, in my main thread back about June through August 2010 and it is in the stickies at the top of this forum there is FAR more information than I could easily detail for you here. The laminectomy surgery was easier on me than the multiple fusion surgeries I have endured. I did not have that "I am pulling my back apart" feeling as I would arise from bed, return to bed, go to the restroom, ride in a car..... or otherwise. It was just easier. Real recovery with pain meds and the like was about or just over two weeks... then the programming of the unit, then the withdrawal from all of my pain management meds because everything worked out well.

All in all, I am happy as a clam with the SCS deal.
Yup,

I just had Penta paddles put in but the placement was peripheral, just under my skin. Working great so far.

Wow, this is a new one on me. That would make for a pretty 'thick' paddle from the sound of it....5 electrodes across and 4 rows. Probably looks kinda like a square??

I just wanted to say tho, that by getting the paddles via laminectomy, it will lower your risk of lead migration substantially. So this is good!
I would think the restrictions are similar to the percutaneous leads. Actually, since the percutaneous ones are just under the skin, I'd think those restrictions should be even MORE strict because of the higher chance of migration. I've seen SO many percutaneous leads (including moi) move.....or in my case, come completely detached!!

You will do well, I declare by faith!

Then you could do more interesting things such as tossing hay bales, golf, karate, and active stuff once scarring has had its way.
