Seizure-Alert Dogs--Just the Facts, Hold the Media Hype

Jenna Martin
Senior Editor, epilepsy.com

"Seizure-alert dogs, save lives". This is what the media would like the general public to believe, and while it makes for a great headline, it also makes for a grave misrepresentation of the truth. The truth is, seizure dogs can not be trained to “alert” a person of an oncoming seizure. Therefore, a seizure dog may be useful in assisting a person during or after a seizure, but is ....

Default Bumpy my most friendliest ,unfriendliest dog

Hello, I'm Patti! This is my first time here, I was so touched by all the stories I had to join!
I have a puppy, well now 3yrs old, but he will never give you pooch smooches, but I have seizures and before I even have 1 he runs and gets my boyfriend and starts licking my hand.
My doctor said wow, how did you train him, we didn't he has always done that since he was little. Then she got real upset when we said we had him fixed. But we told her he is a mutt, boxer/ lab/ shepard. His father Thor (boxer/Lab) when I have a seizure just lets me have it, and will bite anyone who comes by me.The mom Isis, well she got nervous when I had 1 and jumped on my arm and broke it in half, but she was just scared and at 135lbs is no little one.
But I've been on just about all the meds they have out and nothing works. So I'm glad I at least have Bumpy. Thanks, Patti

I have had two service dogs who alerted me in advance for PCS onset which can include small seizures. I think that it works or not by how much you are in tune with your animal. I have a cat who is my buddy, and he is better able to alert me than the 2 service dogs (one of which has passed). Unfortunately, the ADA will be officially changed on March 15 2011 to exclude all animals to be considered service animals except dogs and small horses. As usual, cats and ferrets are underated, even though I know of many disabled people who are helped by these animals by alerting to conditions including medical, and fetching etc.
