Post How to Select the Dog YOU Need

Great site on selecting the adult dog for you.

http://www.iaadp.org/criteria.html

Dog shelters are a significantly ideal place to look for your eventual companion. Only look at adult dogs. Two years old is a reasonable age to consider as they are finally out of adolescent and settled into adulthood. Realize it will probably take more than one visit - don't settle on the first pretty or handsome dog who catches your eye (and/or heart).

I would caution against organizations who rescue specific breeds as these dogs are usually surrendered for severe persistent behavioral problems, including socialization problems. Take your time and check around for feedback on their ability to be straight about the animals and who try to find you a "good fit". I had a completely inappropriate emotional basket case foisted off on me once and they were very put out when I had to return her within the first week.

This site (again, http://www.iaadp.org/criteria.html ) also goes over breed traits (remember, not all of a specific breed will have the "official" list of traits) and helps guide you if you are looking for a specific breed or breed cross. Actually, golden retrievers and yellow labs are especially great for children needing companions for school.
