Hi, I was injured several years ago which necessitated 10 plus major surgeries and now, after being prescribed a large amount of medications I'm wondering if one of the events mentioned may be the cause of what I'm going through?
For the past year I only satisfy my wife without the use of my penis but, she is doesn't like this as she fears that I'm not not satisfied (we've tried almost everything to get me erect) even though I reassure her that I am!
I see a pain management doctor along with a urologist. The pain management doctor wants to add more prescribed meds meanwhile, the urologist wants me to have a pump installed or come in once a week for a shot in the penis, both of which doesn't interest me.
DOES ANYONE HAVE SUGGESTIONS; HAS THIS HAPPENED TO YOU WHAT CAN I DO TO GET ME MY LIFE BACK?
I'm in my mid 40 forties and my wife late thirties, and have a lot of years left for intimacy leading to intercourse!

Welcome to Neuro Talk. Be at ease here. I hope you will get some responses. I am F, but I have a friend who is in the same boat. He is just a bit older than you. He had too many surgeries, and too many medications. You need to seek a Sexual Therapist, or a field of medicine called a physiatrist. They treat the whole person, not just the symptoms. Maybe you are on too many medications. The list is HUGE, of medications that cause this problem. Blood pressure medications, pain medications, are just two examples. There really is hope for this without more intervention, with shots, etc. That frankly if I were a guy would be my last resort! I hope that you continue to go forward, and find the kind of help, who can pick apart, your injuries, in conjunction with all your medications. We will support you here at NT, no matter what the problem is. Go with your wife to any appointment, and lean on each other while you seek a solution. You are right, you have many years yet together. ginnie

I feel for you. You have a great wife who seems willing to stay with you. Many would pack it in. Due to medications etc., I'm afraid i'm in the same boat with you, except for one thing. I'm not married.

You have brought up a subject that is very difficult, because like it or not, we tend to place a great deal of our self worth on our ability to function sexually. It took guts to do that. Its hard to say which of the factors are preventing you from attaining an erection. I do know that the fear of not being able to function normally can make things worse.

Do you have normal feeling in your penis? I don't blame you for not wanting to have a pump installed or receive shots. You want what you had back. It sounds like your urologist and pain Dr. need to get together and figure out the cause. You are still a young man and deserve to have that portion of your life restored if at all possible. If neither of your Dr.s know the answer, see if they can refer you to someone who specializes in your problem. I hope you are able to find answers. Don't give up.

Have any of these doctors tested your adrenal hormones? Chronic pain and many meds can deplete and supress them to the point of affecting function and interfering with how the body & mind cope with pain.

Thank you for the responses, its reassuring knowing there's a site to educate without embarrassment. Dr. Smith, my urologist is currently treating me for low blood testosterone levels and my wife injects me twice a week to increase these levels. I'll ask my urologist if it's necessary ( I've had numerous blood and urine tests taken in the past from his practice) or, if there has ever been an indication with my adrenal gland which may warrant an endocrinologist involvement.

Just as an aside, testosterone can be given through patches that are placed on the skin and changed daily. I'm sure your Dr. gave you your options. just a thought.

All that's good; testosterone is one of the adrenal hormones, and has a lot to do with what I was talking about, but there are others that your endocrinologist may not be current with as pain endocrinology is somewhat new. Here are some articles:

I was injured in an accident a couple years ago, and had ED as a result of low testosterone from hypogonadism. I take daily testosterone supplements which increase libido, and I also take Levitra to treat weak erections. I find this combination effective.

Try to find a doctor that does the Bio-T injections for low T. The injections are about every six months. What doc does is inject bio identical. My doc does them he claims the bio identical is better without sny of the side effects of creams or patches.
I had the injections with b in b two weeks my T level went from 400 to over 1000
Google Bio-Tbto see if there is a doctor in your area. I will warn you it is a bit pricey but averaged out over what you might be paying now it might not be more
