hi. i'm new here, suffering from post concussion syndrome. i'm unable to sleep well, wake up in the middle of the night and drift in and out of sleep resulting in waking up exhausted. sleep study didn't show anything abnormal (very mild apnea, no treatment suggested) though i was only asleep for about two hours during the session. i take magnesium and extended release melatonin before bed, have tried chamomile and sleepytime tea, have tried gabapentin but nothing seems to be helping.
has anyone experienced something similar or have any ideas? |

I have this post here. I've been sleeping very good for a couple years on this combo.
No concussion history but my sleep changed with the Fibro issue hit me in 1999 and I worked long and hard to come up with this. Works good for me. One can vary as they see fit. http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread220676.html |

I'm new, too, to this site & have had 2 concussions past 2 years. Haven't been able to tolerate any meds(indocin, topamax, pamolar etc). Found 5-HTP is allowing me to sleep better & decreasing headache intensity. I'm taking 200mg 2x/day & buy it at Costco. My concussion specialist says you need 400-600mg to help headaches & is slowly increasing dose. When I went off 5-HTP for a month as workers comp refuses to pay for it, the headaches & sleep issues increased. Hope this helps you!

I'm nearly two years post concussion syndrome and sleep is still an issue. I wake two or three times a night and have trouble getting to sleep again, I was fine before my injury. Like you I've tried a variety of things but nothing seems to work. Some nights are better than others but I can't find any pattern as to why some nights are better than others. Insomnia is probably one of the most persistent PCS symptoms as sleep is so complex. I've reached the stage now where I try to forget about it and remain optimistic it will sort itself out in time and I'll be able to enjoy what was one of my favourite pastimes again!

I had 2 concussions as a 9 year old where I had loss of consciousness and amnesia. After the two concussions, I was diagnosed with narcolepsy, sleep apnea and insomnia. Nothing really helps sleep. Sleep doctors for years have treated daytime sleepiness with Provigil and a stimulant. It certainly was helpful in regard to some aspects of life. Are you seeing a sleep clinic or looking into going somewhere?

I'm in the same boat as a few of you! I'm only 3.5 months into post concussion syndrome and the biggest problem is insomnia. Unfortunately, for me, insomnia was an issue for years prior to the concussion. Basically, the concussion took the insomnia and made it worse. Always fall asleep for the first 3 hours and then I wake up every hour. I simply wake to turn to the other side and fall back asleep, like something is snapping me out of sleep. I thought it would be blood sugar related cause I have low blood sugar issues. But that's improved greatly lately, due to diet changes. I also would eat a high protein snack at night but no change. I'm a side sleeper and don't wake up, gasping for breath. So I highly doubt it's sleep apnea. Nevertheless, however, I got a referral for a sleep doc, which I'm going to use. At least I can get some answers on my brain wave activity during the night. I read that there are brain wave disorders that can cause this problem. So who knows, it's worth a try.
Melatonin doesn't work cause I don't have probs with falling asleep. Took a herbal sleep concoction with the same effect. Been practicing good sleep hygiene too. I'm about to try 5 HTP. I just wish I knew what keeps waking me thro the night. So frustrating! |
