Default Eeg question

So i had an eeg and my doctor said he was doing it to see my brain waves to see about my sleep because i cant sleep. Why would he do an awake study for that? Also he said i didnt achieve stage 2 sleep. Why would he note that on an awake study and i didnt sleep at all again it was an awake study. So confused.
