I found a nice large butterfly net at Bass Pro Shops a couple of years ago. Hubby uses it to catch critters who have been carried in by Oreo. She doesn't always kill them either.
The net is not really long, but is bigger and stronger than the little dinky ones tourist traps sell in vacation spots.

But haven't had a snake yet!

We never got use to the smell. Luckily we don't have to worry about it anymore since we had water pipes installed -- too much arsenic in our well water.

We used bore water for our garden and loo flush when we lived in the country, and there were times when it smelt just like you're describing ... especially if the water level got a bit low.!

I dare say what we call bore water would equate to well-water where you live.

Well, we never found the cause of the smell but the odor is now gone

Many of you mentioned the well water as a possibility. We have lived here for over 13 years but the first 6 months to a year our house smelled like rotten eggs or more approprately, sulfur due to the well water. It was horrible and I was quite thrilled when the water quit smelling.

I had been wondering if our water could once again be the odor problem but the smell was not throughout the house like it was years ago.

Could it have been a dead mouse somewhere that finally quite producing an odor...that's possible but I guess I will never really know.

The idea of the odor being a natural gas leak scared the poo out of me. I'm glad that was not the case.

The cause of the unidentified odor will remain a mystery and hoping it never returns.

Thanks to everyone for the ideas and stories, it helped alot

Every now and again the Gas company will pressurize or test their system, and it can cause a horrific odor.

If you have a gas/propane system, PLEASE call the gas company if you smell sulfer or egg smells. They add the stuff intentionally so that you will know if you have a leak somewhere. Please dont mess with gas.

I had a dead mouse in a camper once. took me forever to find it. It had crawled behind the heating system, and was stuck behind the furnance. GROSS! it rotted enough evenually that I could grab it with a coat hanger that was bent...ewww! That took a long time to get rid of that smell.

I hope your still smell free.
