Morning world.
Glad you got back to sleep Alffe.
I'm not usually online at that time of night. I do try to limit myself lol.
I was checking the news about yesterday's earthquakes (and subsequent tsunami warnings). I needed to know things were a little in order before I could sleep.

Alffe 04-03-2007 03:34 AM

Lara, once again it sounds "bumpy" in your part of the world. Hope all is ok.

Lara 04-03-2007 05:09 AM

Thanks for thinking of us in the middle of your night! Hope you got back to sleep alright.

Dreadful day yesterday. Earthquake of 8.1 in the Solomon Islands. Last time I looked at the earthquake site online, they were still happening. So I wake up and there was breaking news that said there was a Tsunami Watch for the north of my State. I went  and then started trying to find out what was going on. A few hours later the whole coast of our state was on Tsunami Warning. As the morning went on they put the whole of the east coast of Australia on Tsunami Warning. So, was a long day. What can I say. Poor people in Solomon Islands did not fare so well. My heart goes out to them.

Lessons were learned from the whole experience I guess. It's the first of it's kind we've ever experienced since the warning system came into being after the Boxing Day Tsunami a few years ago, so the media went totally crazy overboard. I guess no one seemed to know what was happening or what to do. People panicked and understandably I guess. However, for the whole warning system to work, this needs to be used as a learning experience so that next time, and the media like to keep telling us there will be a next time, people are more prepared.

Medical teams and aide gone in there today. I would imagine New Zealand is doing the same.

eek, I forgot in all that to say that everything here went just fine and that there was no tsunami in Australia. Reports of tsunami in Papua New Guinea though, and of course in the Solomons. Solomons are above and to the right of the map and Indonesia is above and to the left on the map. Papua New Guinea right above.
