The hummies are coming! The hummies are coming! The hummies are coming! The hummies are coming! The hummies are coming!
One of my favorite parts of civilized weather is the hummingbirds. Track their migration here, and report any sightings to aid in the tracking: http://www.hummingbirds.net/map.html FYI: Males have a very dark, almost black hood while females have a white breast, are a little bigger, and tend to sport slightly more muted colors. This particular site is focussed on the Ruby Throated found in the bulk of the midwest. If you're pretty well west of the Mississippi river, different maps apply.

Are you watching our Hummingbird cams?
This past week has been very exciting! My hummers don't arrive until the Mertensia blooms as a rule. But I am eager for them too. I bought them a new feeder, even, at Lowe's. (sticks on the window). http://neurotalk.psychcentral.com/thread113287.html (many are hoping Phoebe will nest again, after this week's disturbing events).

I had no idea about this, thanks (I'm not pet people)! That webcam is amazing, I've never seen hummy eggs in a nest before, I've only ever seen one hummy nest period.
Sometimes I leave my video camera running on my feeder all afternoon then watch them in slo-mo, it's fascinating. I might just need my own webcam one of these days.

I've been watching the "Hummie Cam" along with mrsD. It's sooooo addictive!
One of the cameras captured a lizard trying to get to the nest and to one of the eggs that had gone bad. It was so amazing to watch the little Hummie attack and push off the lizard! He fell! Then she got rid of the offending egg. They are smart little creatures. I just jung up my Hummie feeder on the front of the house today.

That is great. We put out our feeders last weekend and have been impatiently waiting. But, I can see on the map that one was spotted about 90 miles south of us just yesterday.
Maybe tomorrow.
