Default trigger- a copy cat crime? HOUSTON -- NASA

HOUSTON -- A NASA contract worker armed with a handgun killed a hostage and then himself after a nearly four-hour standoff Friday in an office building at Johnson Space Center.

Houston police said a second hostage, a woman, escaped with minor injuries.

Houston police spokesman D.W. Ready said earlier that the man was a white male between 50 and 60 years old. His identity and motive were not known.

I've been so shocked about all this. Not really been able to post lately but just wanted to say that I was listening to a couple of aussie journos on the tv yesterday or day before and they doubted that our regulations would have enabled a tv station to show what they did over there.

We had a horrific incident here years back that changed our nation forever, but I hadn't wanted to bring it up in case people jumped on me because it could be of a political nature. Our gun laws were changed here after what was known as the Port Arthur Massacre. We are very different from other places in that regard. That was in April, 1996. He killed 35 and injured more, about 40 or so. He didn't take his own life and is in prison.

Different subject, but I was taken aback when in the US with what was actually allowed on tv. Advertising of drugs and drug studies etc.. Doesn't happen here.

Lara
I remember my first time in the US back in the late 70s.....I was shocked beyond belief when a business aquaintance of my friends invited us for a meal, and after dinner showed us his family room which was filled with his arsenal of weapons

I am just heartbroken that, on the official day of mourning for the VT victims, and the remembrance day for Columbine.........yet more untimely death in Texas now.
Doesnt matter if it is one person or a hundred who are killed.........

Despite the misgivings of the young police, I eventually saw this family and the presence they had in the immediate area. As we drove away in our marked police car, a half brick bounced on the roof of the vehicle. The driver kept going.

I said, 'What are you doing, they've just hit the car with a house brick!" The young constable said, "Oh, they always do that when we drive past."

The police were either too scared or too lazy to do anything about it. The damage bill on police cars became costly and these street terrorists grew stronger and the police became purely defensive. You see, the Police Royal Commission was about to start and the police retreated inside themselves knowing that the judicial system considered them easy targets.[1] The police did not want to get hurt or attract Internal Affairs complaints.

sounds like a real fun place to visit
in usa we dont put up with crap like that

For some months after that, police routinely rounded up the family whenever it was warranted. However, some years later, with a change of Police Commander and the advent of duty officers under Peter Ryan, the family got back on top and within months had murdered a young Australian man who had wandered into their area drunk. They had set up a caravan where they sold drugs twenty four hours a day. They tied up half the police station with Internal Affairs complaints ranging from the sublime to the ridiculous, but under Peter Ryan, these complaints were always treated seriously.[2]

In effect, this family had taken"

so why didnt this story make it on someones thread and we all weep together about how bad the world is??!!
