Default NASA stuff

STS-125 is the next shuttle mission - it's gonna do work on the hubble telescope. Schedule (all times Central time):

Launch: 5/11 13:01
EVA1 5/14 05:16 - 12:06
EVA2 5/15 05:16 - 12:01
EVA3 5/16 05:16 - 12:06
EVA4 5/17 05:16 - 12:06
EVA5 5/18 05:16 - 12:06
Landing: 5/22 10:42

Wow. I didn't realize the activity times were so boring... EVA = space walk.

I know that every mission is a risk, but I am glad that they are going ahead with the last fix for the Hubble. I for one, love the stuff that has come out of that piece of machinery! We've seen things never before visualized, and this will only increase our information when it comes to science!

God Bless the astronauts and their mission!

Now...about the shuttle program...I'm one of those folks who is NOT comfortable relying on other countries to run our astronauts back and forth to the ISS!

What can you tell us about the replacement for the shuttles and the timetable? Is there anything that we taxpayers can do to further the program and get something moving faster??

Relatively uneventful launch. We lost a couple transducers that effected commo for a while but Rebecca assures me this is normal. I think she sits at the THOR console. Norm was happy - he's the flight director. It appeared to go smoothly.

Forgive my memory issues, but why are they doing away with the shuttle program next year? Are we abandoning space exploration altogether?

I had forgotten about this until they mentioned it on the news yesterday as this being the last chance to fix Hubble before the shuttles go away.

We're supposed to retire shuttle September 30, 2010, per congressional decision after the Columbia accident. We've got 8 or 9 missions I think between now and then.

Personally, I think we'll have 1 or 2 missions after 9/30/10.

Then Ares/Constellation/CEV whatever will fly sometime around 2015. Earlier if Obama gives us money.

We got started late yesterday for EVA1. The rest of the EVA's have been moved out about 2 hours, so shift the times for the next 4 by ~2 hours.

Yesterday was the easy one, and it took an extra hour! Now they get hard.

First landing was scheduled for 0900 CDT this morning but just got waived off. We'll try again 1040 CDT, but weather in Florida's crappy. We'll try again tomorrow, but my bet is on Edwards AFB on Sunday.

There goes another 3 day weekend...
