Confused All gone -- I can't believe it!

I bought a little digital voice recorder specifically to get my Dad's stories recorded. We talked and talked and I recorded over two dozen sessions of varying lengths -- a few precious hours of conversations about his childhood and how things were way back then.

I just pulled the recorder from my purse and there is absolutely nothing on it. Zip. Zero. Nada. It reads that I have 15+ hours of recording time left. It was totally full a couple of weeks ago. Totally. I probably had 5-6 hours of history on it.

It's not the batteries. I found a "hold" switch that most likely would have protected the contents, but its obviously too late now. I am so sad and disheartened.

I guess we'll start over.

Signed,

Technology Klutz

OH Twink! That is just horrible, so sorry. The good news is, now you get to listen to the stories all over again

Before doing anything else with the recorder, I'd take it to someone / a pro at digital/data recovery.

It may seem like the impossible, but I assure that that's not always the situation. Digital data can be recovered in ways that were not possible in the past, including from peripheral cables.

Thanks, Bobbi. Hadn't considered doing that. I'll ask around to see what I can find out.

Aww, Twink, that's too bad. I hope Bobbi's right and you can salvage it. The way they make things nowadays it's pretty hard to erase or lose something. If not, then you can spend more quality time with Dad!! I'm sure he'll enjoy it!

BTW, if you ever type up the transcripts I would love to read them....it's fascinating to hear (or read) about the way things used to be.

Your Dad has seen and experienced so many changes and inventions over the years. I'd love to sit and listen to him talk about them. That stuff just fascinates me!

T.Toes, if you want to PM me the brand name of the recorder, I'll see what I can locate re: recovery.

Too, I did a quick search, not knowing or familiar with the device you have, and found the following:

http://www.google.com/search?hl=en&q...ry%22&aq=f&oq=

I'd look at the links and visit some of the sites on the right-hand of the results. (Those advertising may have some of the best outcomes.)

In the past, when I was a newbie to data recovery, I'd find sites/services that were potentially helpful, read a lot, and start narrowing the possibilities.

Myself? I've never had to take anything in for recovery; I've always done it myself. I'd start with the tools that offer free trials, even if not all the data could be recovered without purchasing full-versions. It would give me an indication of ease-of-use, etc., that way.

The first recovery tool I purchased was sold, back then, for about $79. One of the best investments I ever made; the same software now goes for about three times the cost.

Twink,
Hope Bobbi's ideas help...it's been my desire to videotape my inlaws before they lose their memories. They're wonderful storytellers, and are chock-full of great memories.
Good luck getting those memories back!!

Oh no! Are you sure they are gone? How many hours does the recorder hold? Is 15 the max amount? Jim has a recorder and did lose some content before because he accidently turned off the hold button. I am so so sorry because I know that was a precious thing for you. Maybe pops is up to re-recording?
