When I was little, my mom would sometimes bring home a very dark brown bread in a can about the size of the tall soup can. It was kind of sweet. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I think I'm hungry for it and I have no idea what it was called or where to get it.

I have a recipe for Boston Brown Bread that my former MIL used to make in a can. I went and dug up my old recipe box, blew off the dust to find it.

Here it is:

Boston Brown Bread

1-1/2 cup water
1-1/2 cups raisins
1 Tbsp. shortening
1 egg
3/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup molasses
2 tsp. baking soda
3 cups flour
1 tsp. salt
1 tsp. vanilla

Boil raisins and water for 3 min. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, molasses and vanilla. Then add dry ingredients. Bake at 350 for 1 hour.

Use 3 - 17 oz cans or
4 - 15 oz. cans or loaf pan (I think I meant the small tin loaf pans)

It's a really easy recipe and it's not real sweet but it sounds so good I might just make some this weekend. Everybody always asked me for the recipe when I made it, so I think it is pretty good.

OMG. I love brown bread! I haven't had it since was living in PA. We used to serve it at restaurant that I worked in called Eat n Park! Their bread had nuts in it and it was shaped like a can and was scored to slice the pieces evenly. I have to make some tomorrow.

I remember date not bread that came in a can, when I was a kid. It was great. We didn't have it very often. You just sliced it and ate it . It was really moist. I thought it was made by Domedary,but my memory is not that good.

I remember it. It was made by B&M baked bean company. Somtimes it had raisins, sometimes it didnt. yummy.
