When I was little, my mom would sometimes bring home a very dark brown bread in a can about the size of the tall soup can. It was kind of sweet. Anybody know what I'm talking about? I think I'm hungry for it and I have no idea what it was called or where to get it.

Took about 4 trips to my kitchen cabinet to try and read the fine print on my glass jar [YES JAR] of B&M beans and found the web site after 4 tries.
Here it is, Two kinds, one plain and one with raisins: http://www.bgfoods.com/bm/bm_products.asp Yes, I remember this! Used to have it when I was a kid! I don't think it's on every chain store's shelves tho. More's the pity. You have ME craving some now too! Thanks for that truly, I needed a memory 'fuzzie' right about now. And the smile it gave me. - j PS: Yes you can post many fun, serious, research oriented and just plain info sites/links here. Just maintain some degree of 'taste'? Folks here do an amazing job at keeping the junk out and the evil viruses and bugs that 'puters get away from our own lives. So, far, knock wood? NO JUNK MAIL! |

Thanks for reminding my about this! Yum-o!
I have a recipe for Boston Brown Bread that my former MIL used to make in a can. I went and dug up my old recipe box, blew off the dust to find it. Here it is: Boston Brown Bread 1-1/2 cup water 1-1/2 cups raisins 1 Tbsp. shortening 1 egg 3/4 cup sugar 1/4 cup molasses 2 tsp. baking soda 3 cups flour 1 tsp. salt 1 tsp. vanilla Boil raisins and water for 3 min. Let cool. Cream shortening and sugar. Add egg, molasses and vanilla. Then add dry ingredients. Bake at 350 for 1 hour. Use 3 - 17 oz cans or 4 - 15 oz. cans or loaf pan (I think I meant the small tin loaf pans) ******* It's a really easy recipe and it's not real sweet but it sounds so good I might just make some this weekend. Everybody always asked me for the recipe when I made it, so I think it is pretty good. Happy Baking! Last edited by Looking4hope; 01-26-2008 at 04:57 PM. Reason: left a step out. |

OMG. I love brown bread! I haven't had it since was living in PA. We used to serve it at restaurant that I worked in called Eat n Park! Their bread had nuts in it and it was shaped like a can and was scored to slice the pieces evenly. I have to make some tomorrow.
