This was certainly the topic of discussion on the flight I took today! Interesting conversations!

Overall, I think that most people think that she should have left home without it!

Both of my daughters have body piercings. I went with them when they had them done and I can tell you it really hurt. Also some body peircings can heal with the skin adhering to the piercing, so removal of the jewelry CAN be extremely painful. Since the piercing can take a long time to heal (months and months), sometimes you really cannot remove the jewelry for some time without jeopardizing the piercing.

I think most of the comments made here about this situation show a real lack of knowledge about body piercings. This woman should have never been forced to remove the nipple jewelry, and certainly not humiliated by the TSA employees. She offered to bare her breasts for inspection in private to prove she was not wearing something that could cause harm to anyone else. The TSA owes her a huge apology IMHO.

amen, and thank you, Pearlie!

my DD had nipple piercings (she's 29).

after her piercings, she was instructed to keep sliding the ring, to make sure flesh and skin didn't adhere to the ring.

but alas, DD forgot to rotate 'em, and geez, one got STUCK.

the skin around nipple rings often heals around the piercing, making them extremely difficult and painful to remove...

I would certainly wish ILL upon anyone who made my DD remove her jewelry with PLIERS... that was horrible, and reprehensible behaviour by TSA.

it SHOULD have been sufficient for Mandi Hamlin to simply display her NMD (Nipples of Mass Destruction) privately, to a female TSA-person.

the snickering and innuendo remarks by the MALE TSAs were also grossly inappropriate, and unacceptable.

to all who posted above that it's a safety issue, yes, I understand that, totally.

BUT... there was NEVER a lawsuit, just a request for an APOLOGY, and an investigation.

and TSA has not even managed to do that, gracefully... they just said they "regret" the incident.

The TSA said Friday in a statement on its Web site that the officers properly followed procedures, but that the procedures must change. In the future passengers can either allow a visual inspection of their piercings, or remove them, the agency said.

The statement stopped short of apologizing to Hamlin.
