According to the Colorado State Extension agency, 12 months.

I would have guessed much longer!

My answer to this question is pretty well type cast now.

How long did your momma keep bottled things BEFORE the stores added "use-by-dates" to their products?

If it was mine, it'd be until it looked different, or tasted funny.

The brine keeps them from spoiling. If you open up the jar, and try to bend the pickle, if it snaps, it's probably okay. If it just bends, it's NOT OKAY!!!

But after 5 years, I would open the jar, (don't put your nose to it), pour the juice in the toilet bowl, put the pickles in several plastic bags, tie it and throw them away.

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY.

There's an old saying "IF IT DOUBT, THROW IT OUT".

I'm a doubter.......... lol

LOL Kelly..That's the first thing I thought of when I saw the title of this thread, too..Where's Pickles??

Anyway, if the seal is not broken, and they're homemade pickles, I'd open 'em and check by the way they look, the way the smell..If they seem OK, I go for it, but don't keep them for long once they're open..
For store bought pickles, I go by the sell-by date and add a couple weeks..Oddly enough, I'm less trusting of manufactured then homemade..Besides, if it's homemade, I know exactly who to haunt if I make a wrong decision..

My thoughts exactly, Po. Open 'em up and take a bite. Crunch, good, mush, bad.

That's the first thing I thought of too. Now we are betting on how long one of us will live?? Creepy!

Anyhow; if the pickles still smell good and look good enjoy and don't forget the ice cream!
