Good for you Snoopy! I tried to run away when I was 16, but my father caught me. He didn't want to have to deal with me anymore either. He sent me off with a one-way ticket to Arkansas, to live with my uncle. He thought it would be good for me to spend my summer in a tiny town feeding chickens in a chicken house. His brother was the mayor AND sheriff, so dad figured he could handle me.

You know kids like us. We can sniff out the trouble-makers wherever we go, even in little towns. Dad didn't realize my cousins in college liked to have fun. I spent my weekends partying at the quarry with my cousins and their friends from Henderson State. I had a BLAST! Unfortunately, being an outsider, I was accused of being a bad influence on everyone. I was handed a one-way ticket back to Chicago.

When I entered high school I was a very smart, girl scout, and an
athlete(I was a fairly serious figure skater). I got mono when I was
16 and was never able to recover enough to return to figure skating, so
I quit.

Then I turned into the wild, partier, crazy girl who hung around with
agroup of girls who only hung out with much older guys. I was a
major punk rocker, even sported the ugly do.

When I graduated I was class cutter and class most disorganized.

When I meet people from that time in my life, I think they are shocked
at who I have become. sahm with four kids and loving it(for the most
part)

Im not so happy with that part of my life but hey, "Its all part of the
journey" and maybe I had to be that person to become who I am today.

Peace,

Sox

Lightbulb this is an interesting thread....

You know, when our son entered high school, were were just about 2 generations older than he. It was a madhouse and he suffered alot from it. He also learned things --specifically who he did NOT want to be. The acting out in HS today is just horrific... kids telling teachers to F* off, calling them idiots to their faces, etc. The drugs are epidemic...one girl took LSD and went to the bottom of the pool and wouldn't come out. She was watching the reflections on the bottom..almost drowned, and was pulled out in time.

I came from a turbulent home, with alot of abuse. I considered school, and this was LONG ago-- as a positive escape. So I just did not respond or look for "excitement". My goal was to escape from my family --become financially independent and have a less painful life. I guess it is all in the point of view.

We raised our son with respect for himself and others. So he was not tempted to try MJ or hang with kids who were acting out. So he was picked on and made fun of. His ADHD and glasses (he was born blind) did not help either. But he loved college and is doing well in his job now. I used to liken his school experience to a mini-prison. We don't get to pick who we go to school with, we are lumped into classes with people sometimes for YEARS...and this becomes fodder for all sorts of behaviors, many of which seem destructive rather than positive.

My son has tried MJ now that he is older, and he doesn't like it much. His roommate sort of egged him on.

I didn't try it until I was almost 30...I certainly didn't like it at all. It burns my lungs and gave me a horrible hang over. (hubby used in Vietnam, and wanted me to try...blech)

I have never used other recreational substances, and don't feel the urge to try them either. I guess I just have a conservative conscientious personality style. I don't have to join others and get high, to enjoy myself. Life is full of exciting things... recreational drugs just make those beautiful things farther away and harder to appreciate, IMO.

Alffe,

I also played clarinet: orchestra went well. Marching? That was a total disaster . As soon as I could, I took the clarinet to a pawn shop and used the money to buy a different instrument .

MrsD

The kids at my school acted similar to the kids nowadays. The only difference is back then guns weren't a socially acceptable way to resolve disputes as they are today. If we had the nerve to get in someone's face, we were forced to face the consequences of our actions.

One girl at school was a good girl and student. Some boys thought it would be funny to trick her into dropping some acid, but they gave her too much. The poor girl went nuts and ended up on the closed psych ward with my mother that summer. She never recovered either. When she came back to school, she kept looking for skunks underneath her seat while in class and trying to pick fights with everyone.

I was a "drug-dealer" for a day once. When kids found out my mother had a huge supply of downers, they kept bugging me to sell them some. I finally broke down and gave some to a friend of mine. We were sitting in Driver's Ed class, and I noticed her head starting to bob. I tried to get her attention to see if she was okay. When she turned her head back to look at me, she fell backwards and started mumbling incoherently. It was an attached desk/chair, so it went along with her - her feet sticking up in the air. The class was entertained, but did we ever get in trouble!

Another time I was in gym class. A friend of mine and I were staring at this black girl who was known to be the baddest - carried a huge knife in her knee socks. We started laughing because it was hard to take someone seriously in those ugly gym suits, let alone fear them - knife or no knife. She saw me laughing and glared at me. The next day, my gym locker was set on fire - destroyed my clothes, books, purse and coat. I had to spend the rest of the day attending class in that silly gym suit - in the middle of winter! At first I was accused of setting the fire, but they finally came to their senses. I never bothered to say who set the fire because I had it coming to me. That girl was mean and bad, but she was also very scared and outnumbered.

I was almost raped in the band room. A group of boys cornered me, and there was no way out. I played the trumpet with a black boy on the football team, and we had become friends. He happened to be walking by and saw what was happening. He scared the heck out of those boys and they never bothered me again.

It was a good school though. It's the alma mater of Dwane Wade! He came back recently to play basketball with the kids.

I was sweet, smart, shy, gorgeous, popular, valedictorian, honor roll all the way.

............

LMAO! I could have cared less about high school and was glad to get out of it! Ran around with college kids, was wild, went to 'woodsies' and got kicked out of pep club.

I think I went to school with Frank.

Will someone please explain what these tubular things are that kids in clubs are drinking?? At least I think they are drinking. I don't drink, however, I did go to discos with my friends (in the 70's), who ordered cocktails and everything came in glasses.

You ordered a drink, it came in a glass, you drank it, or you nursed it to death. However IT CAME IN A GLASS.

I was watching some teen movie the other day. They were at a bar and the waitress came over with tubular things. Various colors. I gather they drink this. The movie didn't show what you do with these tubular things.

Do you pour them into a glass and THEN drink it?? Or do you put the tube in your mouth and THEN DRINK IT??

I really don't know what these things are.

I want to be prepared for when I'm 70, skinny as a bitc* and going to bars (only kidding, actually I don't drink at all). I want to know what these things are so when someone hands it to me, I don't make a fool of myself and go "what the heck is this??"

lol lol
