Default Memories, like the cobwebs in my mind...

So, today, after 60 years of useful life, three re-upholsterings and in excellent condition, my parents' wing chairs & ottoman went on their way to a new home. They're solid as rocks but this round of upholstery has seen better days and Jack said, "No way!". Someone will have themselves a real find one of these days.

It caught me with an emotional reaction, I did not expect this!

Memories on top of memories from my entire life just flooded my mind.

I got over it and the living room is HUGE!

AWWWW isn't it weird how certain things do that. I have a gray tshirt that is now soft and almost transparent and full of small holes that was my dads who died in 91, I still wear it and everyone thinks I am insane!

I know someone whose Dad died 10 years ago next month, and she still sleeps with his pajama shirt under her pillow, just in case she wants to touch it. Isn't that ridiculous?

Material things hold sentimental value for a lot of us. Those chairs and ottoman were a part of you, Cindy. It's not unusual to have the kind of reaction you had.

I still have Tim's wallet, complete with his drivers license, Union I.D. card and the $18 he had in it the day he died. I keep it in my dresser drawer. Sometimes I take it out and just look at it. Sometimes it brings him back for just a second.

I still have some of my Dad's little trinkets that he treasured. His JFK watch I gave him years before his death, his old straight razor and shaving cup he used up until his last year when his hands became too unsteady, his old pennies he carried around for conversation pieces. I'll probably always have this stuff. No monetary value but oh, the memories.

AMN, try to hold on to some little things of your parents that have meaning but that don't take up so much room.

I also have some of my Mom's old costume jewelry. Most of it is a bit loud for my taste, but it means so much just to have it in the jewelry case.

Oh, not to worry, Wiz, I have plenty of sentimental items, but I admit, when the door on the truck came down, I was awash in memories of thens and whens. It's okay, I hated those chairs but the memories from them are alive and well.

When I saw the title to this thread, I did not think of things in my parents' house. It is probably my personal situation of losing father at age 4 and mother at age 21.

My nest in newly empty so the title of AMN's thread went to the intangible.

The first memory that came to mind was with my DS. He was an infant. Every day at 4 PM, we would go out onto the patio. I would put on nursery music, hold him and dance around singing.

That was a memory in the corner of my mind.
