Lightbulb Dr. Daniel Amen MD

Is on PBS today in my area. Live in Detroit.

I am putting this here because more eyes will see it than in
the other forums.

He is doing a new program called Change Your Brain and Change your Life.

It is just amazing.... Watch for it in your PBS viewing area, or get the book.

He explains brain scans showing various types of damage...things like not enough sleep, drugs, stress, etc.
He has been a moving force in Bipolar and ADD research and now with over 40,000 scans in his experience, he is now showing the public how to improve their brains, how to get along with "difficult" people, etc. He is a great speaker, with warmth and humor and incisive data!

How to eat right, improve brain blood flow and understanding 3 areas of the brain that lead to "difficult" people and some disorders. Prefrontal Cortex issues (ADD impulse control), Cingulate issues (rigidity, OCD) and Limbic (emotional response and depression).

I found this program by accident this morning. So I guess my guardian angel wanted me to see it. (LOL).. I've read his forums in the past, and one of his books on ADD, and have seen his website many times. He is just a wonderful speaker, with alot of common sense and useful information to improve your life. For example he had to screen 3,000 people to find 90 scans indicative of a "normal" for comparison! These are PET scans, BTW. Not very many I'd say, so most of us have room for improvement.

Check it out in your PBS viewing area (this is pledge time for us) and perhaps get the book if you miss the show.
You won't be disappointed!

For example:
Humans have the largest prefrontal cortex (about 30% of the brain)
Chimps 11%
Dogs 7%
Cats virtually NONE..... So he had pics of HIS cat doing things that he cannot train her
out of... LOL... His opinion== cats do not plan, and live virtually in the moment!

Lightbulb one simple

agent that reduces brain blood flow is ......

loss of sleep. Less than 6 hrs a night, or worse, 4hrs, causes significant changes in the brain.

I am definitely buying this book!

This book is only $8.25 on Amazon.... paperback! Amazing. And it is from 1999,
not new! Surprise !!
Very low prices on Ebay!

Wink I am watching Ebay...

His book is going aggressively with bidding there. VERY.

I am going to get it at Amazon with the $25 free shipping.(it is not really expensive).
I have a cute, touching hummingbird one I want (First Flight),
and am just looking for a 3rd thing to add in.

We had a nest a few years ago up North...but it wasn't close enough to get good pictures (I didn't have my zoom digital then). This book gets nothing but RAVES...so I have to have it to look at when I am down and need a lift --touching and beauty together..who can beat that?

If you can catch Dr. Amen on PBS you will see why the book is so popular.

P.S. thank you for letting me keep this on the main Social thread...
I thought more eyes would see it here than on the Book thread.
It is THAT important!

Is there a support group for us folks addicted to those used books at Amazon?
If so, I might need to go. LOL!
However, I have gotten a LOT of great books this way. It is just toooooo good to pass up. Thank you again Mrs. D for this great book idea! Fascinating stuff!

Lightbulb update..

I finally got this book and finished it.

The PBS show went into more lifestyle changes than the book does. But the book is fascinating none the less.

One would wish that doctors would look at Dr. Amen's work (which is 20yrs now in the making), and make more targeted
choices for treatment bases on brain styles. This would give more success with less experimentation with RX drugs.

The book goes into 5 areas (the TV show did only 3).
Violence/aggression (temporal)
poor focus/concentration (prefrontal cortex)
OCD (cingulate gyrus)
anxiety (basal ganglia)
depression and emotional blunting (limbic system)

There are many examples from his practice and many many pictures of the brain. The chapter on drug abuse is really
a shocker. What too much caffeine and nicotine can do the brain, is not what people would expect!

All in all it was a very interesting read.
