I hope they find his body soon. It would be amazing if he's alive but that is a slim chance. Thanks for posting this Cheryl.

I know it will be a big relief to his family and friends if they do. The site is not that far from where he took off. But it's rough terrain.

I've flown a lot in that area and I certainly wouldn't want to go down in that area. It's hard to find crash sites there.

I hope he did not patch the holes in his plane with duct tape like someone I know

Cheryl,

I did not want to say anything about this because we were not sure if the findings were real when we first learned what the guys at Kittridge Sports found.

They are the guys who, along with the guys from the Troutfitter, help us each year with our fly fishing stuff in Mammoth.

What has not been reported is that they actually knew immediately what they found but wanted to buy time so that they could contact the folks in Lancaster,CA wherein Steve had flown for so many years. They then informed an attorney for advice...and that is where the news reports have started their reporting.

We have spent a bunch of time in the area of the crash site over the past ten years and I have to admit that the site, although not very remote by hiker's standards, is not in the view of the main trail in the area. It is for that reason that the site was not observed earlier this summer.

The impact was direct. I do not think that a skilled pilot like Fossett would have made such a flight path error unless there was structural damage on the aircraft or Steve had a sudden physical impairment.

I am really sorry for his family and friends, but glad that they have a chance at closure.

-Vic

If weather played a factor, such as a thunderstorm downdraft, then that could explain the accident. There were thunderstorms over the Sierras that day so who knows.

I have flown in that area a lot over the past and if you get caught in a downdraft, the aircraft can run out of altitude and power very fast. We used to fly from Fallon to Visalia thru that area 2 or 3 times a month.

I remember flying thru there one day and thinking to myself, I am at full power, and the vertical speed indicator is showing 1500 ft per minute Descending and then 1 minute later I am climbing at the same rate. If you don't have enough terrain clearance...well, it's not good.

When I was the manager of the flying club in Fallon, we stressed weight and balance and density altitude to the jet pilots who always had extra power. When you are in a small aircraft, you don't have that extra power at 9,000 feet on a hot day. The airplane thinks it's at 12000 feet and there is no extra power at that thin air.

Anyway, I saw the article, heard the news and hope they some remnants of a body to put closure to all the speculation. It's been over a year.

That is one of the areas that we avoided in the Cessna 172 becuase of air pressure changes. The hopeless feeling of dropping 1,200 feet in moments is just too much to handle when being in control is your bedrock or strength.

The zone just over the Coachella Pass does the same thing and it has always driven me nuts.

All we can hope for now is that there are some remains still present, but I am not holding my breath since the winter was not good for the wildlife and they have been scavanging all year just to survive according to the Bishop office of the California Department of Fish and Game.

I hope for the best out of this tragic situation.

I'm sorry, but I just heard on our news that body parts have been found in the wreckage.

I hope the family can now grieve and achieve some closure. My condolences to his family, friends, and other aviators.

I am still watching this story. Some of my friends have been down there with the search and rescue team.
