In CA, some officers will start writing citations on expired tags within two weeks of expiration - despite the DMV stating that it could take up to 8 weeks for the tags to arrive and people can continue to drive on the (outdated) tags.

The hassle of having to go to court to clear a citation (that shouldn't be issued in the first place) is just another worry I don't need. Getting to court is about as predictable as getting to a scheduled doc appointment these days .

Next year, I guess I should mail in payment about 6 months in advance . Since DMV hasn't gotten back to me, a day is lost.

It's too bad that the DMV doesn't allow for more than one year's worth of registration at a time... but since the fee is adjusted according to the car's value, looks like they can't.

Hi Bobbi!

I know just what to do!!!

You can go down to your nearest DMV office with your most current registration, and they will give you a 30-day Temporary Operating Permit with a big number on it. The number will be the month this little paper expires.

Tape this paper to the right rear corner of your back window, or in the front right lower corner of your windshield. When you get your tags take out that paper.

They will probably give you one with a big 2 on it, which means it will expire in Feb. This will let you drive around legally until your tags come in the mail..

Merry Christmas!!!

PS: since you already paid for your tags they will give you that paper for the window with no problemo at all.

I am going to get the bank's statement, and also see if I can get a photostat of the cancelled check.

If I must go to DMV, I must, it sure seems.

Color me a cynic, but I do envision that on my way to DMV I will be pulled over. Given how things go, I betcha it's a K-9 unit. Evidently, that's happened before; my car broke down on the freeway and it was a K-9 unit that stopped to assist. I will not try to "make friends" with the pooch, and will keep my hands on the steering wheel where the officer can clearly see them .

When my sister was a MP, she gave me a pair of Smith & Wessons (cuffs). Think I should leave 'em at home .

I have read everyone's ideas, and will definitely try them .

ETA: I just realized something... I should be looking for the silver lining behind this cloud. So... here goes: I've wanted an opportunity to apply this to something: These tags are the bane of my existence .

My bank does not give cancelled checks back either. So I had a prob with a loan, they said I did not pay, bank said they had they cancelled check. (On time too!)

I had to go to the bank to get a copy of the check and send it to the other bank I had the loan with, but it fixed the prob.

And here in OH, you get 30 days grace on your tags. I can't say how it is where you are.

bobbi,

I talked to a police officer this am where I live.

He says that it is all arbitrary and up to the individual officers.

But he says your best bet is to call the DMV and have them fax you something in writing. Do you have access to a fax machine?

He says that if you are nice about it and it is their fault and you explain the situation well, more than likely, they'll help you in that regard.

Keep that letter with you and the person's name as well number you talked to handy.

not sure if that would help. But I like Allan's suggestion.

anyways, it's interesting to see how people's work ethics are these days...as da wife would say, "If the nurses have work ethics like a lot of these folks, no patients would make it out of the hospitals alive..."

good luck

LOL! If you did get pulled over be honest, tell the cop where you are going. I am sure he will let you go on your merry way.

When you are driving around in california have you noticed cars with a square red paper with a big white number on it? Usually they are in the back window. This tells the cops that even though your tags are not up to date, you are still legal to drive this vehicle on the road.

I am sure that the DMV has record that you payed, and they will give you proof of this as well. It usually takes up to 60 days for the tags to come in the mail, so tell them to give you a temporary permit good for that amount of time, that is if they dont already have it done for you because they do this on a day to day basis.

You can solve almost every issue at the DMV with money LOL, but since you already payed there is really no issue.

In Oregon if you are in the DEQ clear air area {Portland metro}, you go get your cars emissions tested and you can pay for it all & get tags right then & there.

The pre 1974? vehicles here - all ya need to do is go online and fill out the form, pay the money and they send the tags. no testing

The tags arrived. A friend placed them on my car .

Geeze, I don't want to go through another delay like this one. Since I can estimate when the renewal notice should arrive in upcoming years, I'm gonna make it a habit to see if I can pay earlier and do my best to ensure the tags aren't delayed.

Holiday shopping I can go ... ho! ho! ho!
