How about a phone call? Or a visit? Do a chore for them..help out..something besides giving clutter and making card sellers money.

That's a good idea but in all reality someone will latch on and make it a card holiday no matter how hard you try. Although, come to think of it, we have Caregiver, Black history, Breast cancer, etc. months and no one sends cards. So maybe rather than a single day, how about a senior awareness month? They know what they have done but how about celebrating their accomplishments to the public?

I do appreciate your ideas too and thank you for thinking about our seniors. I just think we have so many other days to deal with already. I didn't specifically mean a card day. I gave my input regarding my grandma only. When I said Hallmark holiday I meant that in a facetious way.

I can see where everyone would get the same idea, since basically most of these national days end up being card giving days.
Agreed. The natural course in our culture is an obligatory acknowledgement and that path of least resistance tends to come in the form of a card.

Personally, I do not typically purchase cards at all, I refuse to play into the machine.

When it comes to the seniors in my life, I find that the small things are what truly matter to them. The most precious commodity is my time. Just giving a little time, bearing no gifts or promises, just simple time.

At Christmas, I drive van loads of seniors around in circles to view lights. They think I am the queen of goodness. It's simple, cheap, and very fulfilling for me.

I visit, if only for 10 minutes— a little hug and an open ear mean the world to them.

Little helps such as picking up milk when I am shopping anyway means a great deal to them. As a gimp myself, those little helps mean the world to me!

I guess I don't understand the value in isolating a single day as the one where an elderly person is bombarded with attention and basically forgotten the rest of the year.

Maybe a movement toward encouraging weekly visits or volunteering a tad of time would get more attention?

Thumbs up

Yes, there is a MIL Day. And October 16th is National Boss Day and they have gifts and cards for that. They are on the band wagon. And there are countless other days set aside for people.

As others have said, I personally go and visit senior citizens wherever they might be. And, I do this more than one time a year. I also call them, at times I bring something such as cookies or the like. I pick their mail up if needed. You name it. They always appreciate it and I am glad to do it.

There are just countless ways to be appreciative of our senior citizens. And by the way, if I do recall correctly, you are considered a Senior Citizen if you are 50 as far AARP is concerned. And at most restaurants, you are considered a Senior Citizen at age 55. You get a deal on your meal. I bet there are a number of us on here in that age group.

I agree with everyone who said that we should remember our Sr. citizen's everyday....not just once a year.

I remember when my Dad was in Assisted Living....I'd go to visit him and end up visiting with dozens of people! He'd get mildly jealous because I'd have to go to umpteen rooms before I left just to say goodbye! But I actually enjoyed it as much as they apparently did. Some of those people have amazing stories to tell if we'd just listen to them.

That's all they really want.....our time. They'd rather spend 10 minutes with you once a week than get a card from you every day.

I still take my already read magazines and books to the Assisted Living community and they love to receive them. Plus, I have to "visit" when I go so they get free stuff plus a visit! I enjoy it, too, and it does my heart good to know that they benefit from it.

I voted for it simply because reading about it here gives me the incentive to find a local retirement home and visit somebodies grandparents.

I lost all of my grandparents by the time I was 6 so I never had that special nana grandpa time that my kids loved so much. Now that they no longer have that connection since all the grandparents are gone I think it would be great to bring this to the spotlight.

Bless you Kimmie and thank you for the reminder...Sue
