You're lucky they asked. I got SSDI , but for the first year, they never asked kid's SS, I brought it up, got back pay and now 2 checks for them every month. I was told once they lost my file, believe they never found it, am in system with kids included now. Kids are expensive. The kid money I put in College funds. Kids are expensive. Did I mention kids are expensive? Back pay went for braces. YIKES!!

Unfortunately, I don't think that you can take it as a sign that you are about to be approved (or....I waited 3 years after getting my kids on the application too), but it does show someone is awake at the ol' ssdi office !

When a parent is approved for SSDI there is an additional awarded for children based on the parent's benefits. This does not require the children be disabled, only that the parent is awarded SSDI. The award for children is 50% of whatever you get awarded.
For example, if you get $800/mo from SS then you children would be entitled to a total award of $400 per month (regardless of how many kids you have it's only $400 if you have one kid or 10 kids). As long as you remain on SS you will get the additional monies for your children until the youngest ages out. They also want to see that you claim the children on any annual taxes you file. If you are a non-custodial parent then they would direct the funds to the parent or guardian with custody. |

To clarify Kloss, the family benefit (can be your kids, stepkids, or divorced spouse caring for the kids) can be UP to 50% of the total ssdi amount.
Your total income (including family benefit) can't be more than 80% of your total pre disability income. In my case, I also still get partial worker's comp, so they just lowered my ssdi so they could give my kids $60/month each (my ssdi was 1980, so I thought my 2 boys would get $490 each) |

Is this $1980 and if so, is this a monthly payment?
