Cathydmommy - the ALJ may have made a bench decision without the need for a hearing, but there is no percentage disabled unless it is all or nothing. For SSA, you are either disabled or not, 100% or 0%. No catastrophic or other ratings.

Also, if you request a hearing, the ALJ cannot deny your case without holding the hearing. It could be dismissed if you don't show up, but it cannot be denied without a face to face, unless you waive the face to face.

Stella you are incorrect. you would have to have a hearing to be denied. an on the record decision is a positive decision before a hearing.

how long does it normally take before you get your letter. It has been over 3 weeks now and nothing. I am about to give up

One would think you'd get your letter within a few weeks and before your checks start coming.

I just got a huge back pay check with no explanation of what it was.

Don't panic until a few months are up

I underdstand what that feels like CDM.

Perhaps I shoukd have said worrying will only make you feel worse and won't make the check get there any sooner.

Have you talked to the electric company about the fact that you are disabled ? Most areas have restrictions that utilities cannot be shut off for a certain period of time if you are disabled or elderly.
