Default When does SSDI end for child's benefit ?

Yes, I know it's at 18......my question is specifically which month.

My oldest will be 18 on 7/5.

I had it in my head that his last check would be the check he receives in June. Then I thought I read on ssa.gov that it ends the last full month before his birthday, but if that's for the month of June, that would be paid in July.

Now I can't find that info on the site.

I need to know if I need to close out his account after he gets his June check because he will be charged a fee by the bank if he doesn't get a July check (free account IF he has direct deposit)

Does anyone have the link to the pertinent info or know the answer ?

Thanks !

Benefits For Children
"Benefits can continue at age 18

Benefits stop when your child reaches age 18 unless your child is a student or disabled.

If your child is a student

Three months before your child's 18th birthday, we will send you a notice that benefits will end at age 18 unless your child is a full-time student at a secondary ( or elementary) school. If your child is younger than 19 and still attending a secondary or elementary school, he or she must notify us by completing a statement of attendance that has been certified by a school official. The benefits then will usually continue until he or she graduates, or until two months after reaching age 19, whichever comes first. "

Thanks Mz M. The info you provided was all I was able to find my last time checking the site.

I did get the notice from SSA saying that benefits end at 18, but it doesn't specify EXACTLY when.

By 'just' saying that benefits end at 18, it would SEEM like he SHOULD be getting a check in August, at least for that bit of July before he turns 18 on 7/5, but I have the vague recollection from checking before that that isn't right.

I thought when I read it about it before it was more specific about which month they would get their last payment.

I could just wait and see when the last payment comes by seeing when he doesn't get paid anymore, but then we'll have to pay the bank fees for that month. I'll need to cancel his account at the end of the previous month to avoid the fee.

My recollection is that it said something about the last month of benefits being the last month they were 17 ALL month, which would mean he'd get his last payment (for June) in the month of his birthday (July), but I also remember thinking at the time his last payment would be in June....and I don't know if that was just me confusing the month of last eligibility with month of last payment.

Make an appointment to speak w/the bank manager "face to face" along with your son. Explain your situation to the BM. He/she will more than likely waive the fee. Only the BM has the authority to do that. If the BM refuses, then it is time to take your business elsewhere.
