Confused SSD with LTD

Has anyone had a problem with getting their long term disability even though they have been awarded their SSD?

I have been on SSD since last july being approved after the 5 month waiting period. However, my LTD company(standard) has caused me quite a bit of frustration. They started paying pretty good, then I told them that I had been approved as soon as I found out i was approved for SSD, the very day I got the letter i called them(which is what they instructed me to do). After that point, they told me they had overpaid me and I needed to pay them back 4500.00. After alot of frustrations, they told me that I only needed to pay back 2700.00. wow, i was happy...NOT!! So for the months they kept my LTD checks to pay off the supposed overpayment they paid me, I received NO check at all. I received a call from LTD recently asking me why I didn't tell them that I had surgery in oct. 06, I wasn't aware i HAD to, being as I pay ALL of my insurance premium (bc/bs cobra), and that they had not made a decision as of yet whether I was eligible to receive their LTD, which I paid monthly dues on while I was able to work. I have not heard from them since. I just wonder if, they decide that I'm not eligible to receive benefits, they will say i owe them back pay AGAIN?? I'm not sure WHY, if youre eligible for SSD, and the rigorous medical background that they do, why I wouldnt be automatically eligible for LTD from the company i worked for (state). I hope all goes better for you with your claim GL.

Default Ssd & Ltd

I received SSD without any problems. I had to hire an attorney to get LTD.
I worked for an insurance company. The local office handled short term disability for me without any problems. Then it was time to go on LTD.

The home office of the insurance company where I worked had a doctor who reviewed claims for LTD. He was a neurologist but not a Parkinson's disease specialist. He denied my claim. He stated that I was diagnosed in 1993 and it was then 2000. He asked the question--why aren't you better?

The home office tried to get me to take very sedentary jobs. That was strange. It was because of my job with the insurance company being so sedentary that I had to leave my job. Sometimes I was so stiff it was hard to make it to my car after work.

The home office also tried to get me to take a job selling cars. I know nothing about cars and have no sales experience anyway.

They backed down when I got a lawyer and they know my lawyer is waitng in the wings in case they try to deny my benefits again. To use a little baseball lingo this time of the year, my lawyer is in the bull pen in case he is needed.

Thumbs Down

Thanks ccshere and patti for your responses. I haven't heard anymore from the insurance co. and the disability specialist told me she would call me every week until they make a decision. I may have to get a lawyer to get mine too. I don't understand if Social Security approves you for disability why it is so hard for Unum Provident to approve you when they have the same information.

i don't belive you can have both at the same time. I am on long term disability and have work comp claim going that has been denied. My work insurance made me file for social security disability also. Which just yesterday was denied. If I am awared the work comp my long term disability wants all the money they have paid me paid back to them. So I imagine it would be the same with the SSD. But I am very psoitive you can not have both at the same time.

when I was approved for SSD, my LTD benefits were soon approved less the SSD offset. Say ypu have woorked enough in your life time if you were to retire you would earn $600. a month but your current job you have been making much more than you ever had then you get sick and start drawing a % of what you made on your current job. If you have worked long enogh you will take the last 4 quarters and the 3 highest will be estimated and you will earn like 60% of your pay. After you are sick for a certain you apply for SSD. When approved you will get the amount you have worked in a life time. Every year we earn more points toward SSD. So let's say SSd apv's you for $600 a month. Because you paid into you last job to have LTD they will pay the differance up to your 60% of what you use to make. Say I get 1098 ssd then to make it even to the 60% I will get another check from my ltd for 500 or 1000 what ever the differance is. Your ltd depends on what you paid into the co. you worked for. SSD is points earned toward retirement.
