That is only true for certain states. NJ is not one of them.
There is a sort of loop hole in the law though. If you joined Medicare because of disability within a few months (3-6) of applying for supplemental ins, you will be enrolled.
Not all states & ins carriers abide by the loop hole though. It is up to the carrier's discretion.

My my Medicare & You booklet, it states which supplemental plans abides by this loop hole. AARP United Healthcare (NJ) abides by this loophole.

I took full advantage of that too. I love to swim. The local YMCA has an olympic size pool which is always heated in the winter. It's like swimming in bath water.

Is anything involving SS not complicated?

I'm nearly pain free in warm pool water and almost normal in warm ocean water. The trick is if I have to drive to get there I end up causing a flare that makes it not worthwhile.

I now live too far from a YMCA (or Easter Seals pool) for it to even be an option. I've been fantasizing about Hawaii ever since temps dropped a few weeks ago. If only I could be a mermaid...
