Default Schizophrenic wants to earn some extra cash

Hey I am a paranoid schizophrenic who would like to spend a half hour a month buying and selling some products online.

I grew up in government institutions became a adult and worked for awhile until I became very ill again (Well I worked while being ill and became more ill) I then decided to get back on ssdi. My disorder will not ever get better but it could get worse. I take medication for it daily.

Will I lose my benefits if I earn some extra cash. How much can I earn? Do I need to worry about losing my benefits or triggering a CDR? Do I need to report my income?

Thank you very much for answering my questions.

Thumbs Down I am looking for real people stories

Ive read the website found it confusing. I also would like to hear real accounts of real people who have tried it to make sure that they didn't get accused of fraud from ssdi and denied benefits.

It's quite confusing. My uncle just received benefits because he has a bad knee. Someone could say he could learn to sit at a desk. they still give him benefits.

I could be told I could if I could do this I can work anywhere for 40 hours a week even though I haven't been employed for 10 years making that pretty difficult. You see what I'm saying everything seems to be a contradiction.

It's a case by case thing.
I don't recall many posting that they are making extra money, probably for the very reasons you mention..

The SS site does say somewhere what the extra earning limit is-

[Two things can cause us to decide that you are no longer disabled and to stop your benefits.

Your disability benefits will stop if you work at a level we consider "substantial."

In 2015, average earnings of $1,090 or more per month ($1,820 or more per month if you are blind) are usually considered substantial.

Your disability benefits also will stop if we decide that your medical condition has improved to the point that you are no longer disabled.

You are responsible for promptly reporting any improvement in your condition, if you return to work, and certain other events as long as you are receiving disability benefits. Page 11 of the booklet we send you when your application is approved explains what you need to report to us. ]

Thanks, I think that I will just save more money. It's not worth losing my benefits.

It really does sound like more of a SSD trap.

It really does sound like more of a SSD trap.

There are work incentives for SSDI recipients but the end line purpose of ALL those incentives is for the recipients to eventually get off of disability benefits. There are no work incentives designed for recipients to get extra cash to live on. So, it is not a trap and there are many people who work and never lose SSDI benefits because they never perform SGA (think of a Down's syndrome bagger at your local grocery store) and those who hide the fact that they are working and performing SGA and end up with cessation of benefits and large overpayments. And everything in between.

You are looking for a law that doesn't exist. That there is a guarantee that work will not affect entitlement to benefits paid because you can't work.

So stories about others don't really help you because the details are different - and the details matter.

But seriously, how can a half an hour a month buying and selling generated any meaningful income? Thirty minutes of work might generate $20? And if you can do it for 30 minutes, why can't you do it for 20 hours a week?

Add the stress of worry and reporting for a few bucks, I agree it might make more sense to figure out how to spend less.
