We're completely new to this and seeing what and how others log it would really be of help.
Also, would having my doctor write a letter saying I am capable of handling my own money affect my eligibility for benefits? (part of my disability is memory replated, which I think is why they want me to have a rep payee)
and with that letter being approved, I would then not need to keep any log of anything?

There is a worksheet at the end of the brochure. She should use exact amounts, like a bookkeeper would and she should retain the receipts for her own protection. They should have mailed her this brochure already. She can give you a small amount in cash after all your basic needs are covered to allow you some spending money either weekly, bi weekly, or monthly--she'll have to determine how well you can manage even small amounts.
It is true that if you're claimed an impairment that effects your ability to manage your own finances and after approval you and you doc claim you are able to manage those funds, SS might investigate further. Sometimes a rep payee is not really needed, but with memory issues, you probably are better off with the extra help.
