Yes, I was referring to the local number help center desk, not national - One can get that when one logs in. Even local lines can have long wait times, but just saying "help desk" instead of going on hold, can sometimes result in a "live" person who can then direct one, or arrange a call back.

when i call the local social security office i do not get a prompt for a choice to talk to a help desk. so it may depend upon the particular local office. They ask me why i am calling then switch me into the person who is taking calls that day. i never had to wait long.
